PostSubject: The Great Split: Main IC Thread   The Great Split: Main IC Thread EmptySat Oct 01, 2011 5:54 am

One could say that seeing their grandmaster crawl around Avendor, stripped down on his hands and knees was not the best thing for the Order of the Dawn. Some could say it is what pushed things over the limit. One could say that it was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, if there was such an animal in Pendor.

Others, would simply state that the grandmaster had lost too much face in his meeting with the king, and that his leadership was no longer strong enough to hold his order together. Whatever the case though, the Dawn, unable to hold itself together amidst so many conflicting beliefs about justice and Astraea's will split once more. This time, however, the split three ways.

First came the New Dawn, who finally broke away from the Dawn officially, and secured Valonbray with massive support from the people which they had been winning over the past several months. However, their numbers weren't great, and the peoples' support would be vital to their survival until they gained new members.

However, the split that came next sent shockwaves throughout the remaining loyal members of the Dawn.

A radical faction, the Red Dawn, gathered nearly two-hundred of the remaining Dawn Knights, half of the order, and made it known that they would no longer tolerate the "soft" rule of Sir Aranor. Led by a bishop who has been blinded by his fanaticism to Astraea, the Red Dawn have marched from Avendor and taken residence around both Javiksholm and Windholm. The Red Dawn immediately took to sniffing out any heretics they can find, and dozens of men and women have been burned in just a short while.

None of the three factions are declaring open war upon each other yet, luckily. There are even rumors that Sir Roland, grandmaster of the New Dawn is planning to travel to Avendor and meet with Sir Aranor. Still, while there is no official war declared between the three new orders, skirmishes have broken out across the Fierdsvain lands, as hot-headed ideological debates turn to bloodshed...

Outside of the village of Kaveraid a great commotion caught the attention of the patrolling New Dawn knights. Fully armored men, their shields painted red, with a black sun in the center, ripped a young boy from his mother arms and began carrying him towards the village center. One knight marched with the child under one arm, while those behind had their hands full of chopped wood. Sir Ordis, leader of the New Dawn patrol, felt his body go numb as what was happening before his eyes sank in. Beside him, a knight spoke, sounding close to tears;

"Sir? Sir, we have to stop them, they're.. They're going to burn a child sir! The bastards are really going to burn a child!"

Sir Oris hesitated, his men were outnumbered by the Red Dawn by nearly two to one. It was likely they wouldn't come out of the engagement alive, and the child would still be burnt. Still, as the numbness left him, it was replaced by an intense feeling of outrage. In spite of the odds, he turned to his fellow knights and drew his sword.

"These men are monsters, and enemies of Astraea no less than the heretics! Charge men, may Atsraea's justice be done this day!"

Sir Ordis then lowered his visor and sent his horse into a run. Before the metal sealed his face from the outside world though, he felt a raindrop. Like a single tear it fell down his cheek. A tear from Astraea, mourning the great injustice of that day.

It would be the last raindrop Sir Ordis ever felt.

Blaze and his Berzerker knights was around the village of Quay. The Berzerkers have just replenished their men with knights and retainers, which have previously been as Huscarls and devoted to Astrea. The standard of the Berzerkers is very high as they are they only ground elite strike force in the Dawn.

A hooded messenger came riding to Blaze and his knights and handed him a letter and ride off.

It reads...

"Blaze,

The New Dawn have offically split from the Dawn, I need your support now.A large group of fools named the Red Dawn have just split from the Dawn, bringing more than half of the Dawn Knights with them.We are outnumbered. Please meet me at Valonbray.

By my hand,
Lord Roland"

Blaze, sighed, and then started to go to Valonbray. His berzerkers were also loyal to Lord Roland as he also helped them in various points, besides being loyal to Blaze.
"The flames of war is back" He tought.

"Alright men! We are to meet with Lord Roland at Valonbray. We have officially split with the Dawn, though there is a new Dawn faction that also split off named the Red Dawn. They have far more knights than the New Dawn and the remaining Dawn!"

Aranor rubbed his forehead and paced his quarters in Avendor. He was worried, his order has split into three. There was bound to be blood spilled, a war was brewing. Reports have come from Windholm of dozens of citizens burned for counts of heresy..

Aranor looked out his window, and wondered what did Astrea want of him. Was he fit to be the champion of light anymore?

Aranor knew one thing, the Red Dawn was the enemy, and they had almost half of the order following them. Aranor could not let the blood-crazed knights ravage the country and kill innocents. Astrea would not want this.

As he pondered his thoughts Sir Rineheart, the intiate who fought beside Aranor at the battle of Veccavia, was risen to the rank of knight-lieutenant, entered the room

He spoke with a stern voice

"Grand master, we drove off a patrol of Red Dawn knights from Ibiran, they were planning to harass the villagers."
Aranor snapped into focus
"Any casualties?"
-"I wounded one of them, but no fatalities on either side."
"Any news of Sir Blaze or his berserkers from Quay?"
-"No sir, I think he may have joined Sir Roland..."
"Damn it..."

Blaze arrived at Valonbray. Greeted by Lord Roland personally. Lord Roland beckons him towards the meeting hall there.
Blaze said to his Berzerkers: " Meet me at the tavern".

At the meeting hall, Several knights were present. Blaze recognized some of them but majority of them are knights that have just been promoted this last few months.Lord Roland explained :

"Blaze, I thank you for coming, you and your 20 Berzerkers are much needed here. Among the 3 factions of the Dawn, we have the lowest amount of knights. The fools of the Red Dawn are randomly burning peasants for trials of heresy......"

Lord Roland then takes out a map

"Knights, I need you to go here. You, take here.Sir , go here. Blaze ,you will take here and defend it from attackers from the Dawn and Red Dawn. We need to prepare for any impending attacks..........."

Blaze responded : "You done much for me and the Berzerkers in the past, we are with you."

Sir Roland looked to the knights around him and the paladin sighed. The past couple of days had been long and sleepless, with constant reports about the condition of the Dawn flowing in, each one more disturbing than the last. The Red Dawn, the very blind fanaticism Roland and the New Dawn stood against were in the position of greatest power. The knights who were loyal to Roland were too few to put up any kind of real show of force against the fanatics, and many knights still remained loyal to the Original Dawn.

The whole situation was one big mess, moreso considering the Dawn was still recovering from the Eventide split, although that seemed like ages away.

The paladin looked down at the map for a long moment before raising his head and speaking.

"This.. Insanity that is gripping our order needs to be resolved as quickly as possible. As always, our number one goal is to defend the people. We cannot march into the territory of the Red Dawn, they are far too strong, but I want all knights out in the field these next few weeks, in particular guard our border with the Red Dawn, let none pass into our lands. We don't need to keep any knights within the city except to act as guard-captains. The people will guard Valonbray for us. I will be departing for Avendor in a matter of days to meet with Grandmaster Aranor. From my understanding he is a.. Sane man, rational. I cannot see us reconciling, but that doesn't mean we cannot work against a common enemy.

While I am gone, I will leave charge of the New Dawn to Sir Roderick..."

As he spoke, Roland nodded his head to the large, armored man in the corner of the room. He look to weigh four hundred pounds, with shoulders as wide as a sword's blade is long. His head was shaved, and several wicked scars made cracks in his face when he smiled. Most members of the New Dawn knew his story. He was an outspoken member of the Dawn, furious with how out of hand, how radically the order conducted itself sometimes. He believed the Dawn to have fallen from Astraea's light, and so eventually he left the order, and instead took up being a priest in Astraea's name.

When he heard of Roland and the New Dawn, he immediately armed himself once more and pledged service to the paladin, and has been a loyal follower ever since.

"... Until my return. I shall bring a select few knights with me, and travel quickly. I do not want to draw attention to my ride across these lands. It would be too good of an opportunity for the Red Dawn to strike, as no doubt they've probably already declared us all heretics."

Finally, Roland motioned a young knight forward, who already had paper and ink ready.

"Keep this short and keep it simple, and address it to Sir Aranor in Avendor. Tell him that I will be arriving within the week, and am going to discuss a peace between our two orders. Write nothing more, nothing less."

Sir Roland then turned, looking all of the assembled knights in the eyes before continuing.

"If you'll excuse me, I have much to organize. You all have your orders, continue protecting the people and patrolling our lands until further notice. Do not engage the Red Dawn on their own lands, we don't have the might to be aggressive right now. May Astraea's light shine upon all of us in the coming weeks, men."

With those final words, Sir Roland departed, leaving the other knights in the room.

Aranor was walking the hallways of Avendor castle when Sir Rineheart came up to him and said

"Sir, a messenger has arrived, he brings a message for you, but he won't say from whom."
Aranor responded "Bring him to me."
Minutes later, the messenger was brought in front of Aranor, and the message given.

Aranor read the message, and let out a relieved sigh.

"At least Sir Roland is willing to talk."

Upon hearing Roland's name, the knights surronding the messenger immediately concluded that the messenger was a knight of the new dawn, they drew their swords and moved to attack him, but Aranor told them to release him

"He came as a messenger, let him go."

The knights relaxed and let the messenger leave the city unscathed

the Chapel of the Martyr, Avendor

Varis prayed to Astraea, eyes open gazing through the dim candle light at the holy statuette.
A dying soldier, sprawled upon the comforting arms of the goddess, one hand holding the scales of justice, the other laying upon the soldier's sword.
Whoever was commissioned for this piece must have been a soldier himself; the agony of a dying warrior gazing into her eyes was reminiscent of the manner men went out in the field of battle. Mortal agony was often prolonged and excruciating, perhaps for men to the suffer such a death was to imagine comfort in the arms of a woman who would guide you through.
Oh justice, how many more would you take into your arms before you see your will realized on this earth.

Varis made the holy sign upon himself before getting up from his postulation, exiting the chapel along with two of his personal knights who watched over him vigilantly.
What kind of world has this become where even a holy place of worship is not safe enough.
Outside Varis squinted against the bright sunlight, looking away for a moment to allow his eyes to adjust. Sir Mattias and Sir Andreas came into view, waiting for him outside.
"Any word of our brothers in Javiksholm?"
"Nothing yet."
"Damm," Varis cursed, grinding his teeth in frustration.
Mattias tried to make it seem better, "Brother Gravados would never think of turning traitor."
Varis turned to Mattias, looking him straight in the eye, "Do not presume anything, third or not, the desires of us all can undo any brotherly tie."
Mattias looked down, shamefully.
"Never in the history of the company has anyone ever turned from the Grandmaster!" Andreas said.
Varis did not turn to look at Andreas, "desires of us all," he simply muttered.
The Judicator quickly paced away, starting to leave the four knights behind.
"Captain where are you going?" one of them asked.
Without stopping, Varis replied, "to Avendor castle, we'll do nothing to resolve this standing here."
The four looked at each other, without another word they jogged quickly behind their captain.

Varis and his knights reach the castle. They are granted entry due their affiliations. Varis passes the unfamiliar messenger, not knowing he is of the New Dawn, but ignores him on the way to the hall. Varis enters the main hall, signaling his companions to wait outside. He makes himself known to Aranor and the others.

*Valonbray*

Those who had seen Blaze and his berzerkers in the city was shocked. It meant several things.Firstly, The New Dawn had much needed support, especially one who fought with the grandmaster in Veccavia. Before the Invasion at Veccavia, Blaze was just a minor knight,he risen up the ranks at Veccavia. Blaze is now quite influencial, especially among the Fierdsvain Dawn recruits...Besides that, Blaze and his berzerkers are one of the best if not the best at unmounted/foot melee combat in the Dawn, and can hold their own against any infantry specialists order like the KotEG

*After the meeting, Blaze went and gathered the Berzerkers outside Valonbray.*

"Pierre, we will split into two groups, one led by me and one by you....Patrol nearby Valonbray up to Quay,and......(a brief pause)you have my permission to disarm or kill any one who takes up arms against us.Dont provoke anyone.Be back by Evening. If you see ANYONE raiding villages or capturing peasants for any purpose, you may engage them, but dont recklessly charge in."

The berzerkers responded : "As you wish, m'lord!"

Blaze said to Jeff :"You stay at Valonbray, and train several qualified retainers to be medics. I think they will be needed."

The berzerkers began to split into two groups of 10 and headed towards opposite direction.

(Berzerkers have 20 men + Blaze, with Jeff at Valonbray 20 are out on patrol)

Aranor is pleased to see Varis.

"My old friend, it is good to see you in these troubled times."

They both walk to the meeting hall.

"As you know, the Red Dawn has been getting more and more bold with each passing day, Rineheart told me he fought off a patrol near Ibiran, the merchants are getting scared, I heard that several caravans heading for Javiksholm are canceling their trips for fear of being burned."

Aranor stops and faces Varis

"You and the Vindicators will not be sent on patrol yet, I have had a message sent to me saying that Sir Roland will come soon to negotiate with me. Based on the outcome of that meeting and the events of the next few days, we will plan our next moves.

Blaze and his 9 berzerkers crouched down, hiding in the trees. Infront of them a group of 4-5 knights were moving towards Quay. Blaze still dont know who are they or where they are from. One things for sure, they are knights of one of the factions of the Dawn.

Upon entering Quay, they began storming the houses and grabbing a few villagers to the center of the village. When a villager tried to complain, the knights killed him. Blaze and his berzerkers, crept towards the village. Appleby, the village woodcutter, was in the outskirts of the village and saw Blaze and his men.

"Thank Astrea !The knights are going into houses, dragging a few people outside for no apparent reason, branding them heretics, we need your help!"he said.

Blaze and his berzerkers were now creeping against the houses, slowly making their way towards the village center. Blaze began forming a plan......

"Sebastien, you and 4 berzerkers go to the opposite side, to try and surround them. Grab the best throwers and pepper them with axes and javelins before charging in.

Me and the rest of the berzerkers will charge in from behind.you choose the time to strike"

"understood" sebastien says.

10 minutes later, the red dawn knights prepared to tie them up. Sebastien choose the moment that most of the knights have their backs turned. Just as one of the red dawn knights prepared to cllimb his dawn horse, an axe landed on the side of his head, killing him instantly. The berzerkers, under Sebastien charged and engaged them. Blaze and his team then stormed the remaining knighs from behind. Before long, the red dawn knights were all killed by the elite heavy infantries of the new dawn (berzerkers). The villagers cheered and offered Blaze and his berzerkers food, which they politely declined.

The bodies of the red dawn knights were all burned quite a distance away from Quay, however the dawn desteriers and the armour of the knights will be taken back to Valonbray. A minor skirmish won, but the new dawn are still the weakest in terms of knights.

Blaze and his berzerkers headed back to Valonbray, to meet with the rest of his berzerkers and also report to Lord Roland. The presence of red dawn near the new dawn territory is disturbing indeed.

After finishing helping the village of Avayburg fight of bandits Wolfarmin and his riders begin to ride to Avendor to but before they could reach Avendor, Wolfarmin spots a Red Dawn raiding party heading for Foxstead. Filled with rage Wolfarmin charges them, and his riders follow suit.

"How dare they disgrace this land with there traitors lives"

Lowering his lance Wolfarmin shouts to his riders to do the same, shocked by Wolfarmin's voice the red dawn knights turn around, and The Wolf Riders crash into the red dawn knights. After the small battle Wolfarmin and his riders arrive at Avendor

"Men go clean yourselves up and go to the tavern until further orders"

Wolfarmin goes to the meeting hall and begins a conversation with a knight

Blaze and his 9 berzerkers arrived at Valonbray. Pierre and his team had arrived but Blaze only saw 8 berzerkers with him. Pierre explained : "We came upon a group of Red Dawn knights, about 7, we managed to drive them off, no casualties on any side, but they managed to wound James in the shoulder."

Blaze sighed : "This is disturbing, we encountered 5 Red Dawn Knights in QUay, all dead now, we are carrying their weapons and steeds back here."

Blaze: "I will explain this situation to Lord Roland, he wont be happy"

Blaze orders several retainers to take the former Red Dawn's steeds back to the stables and their weapons into the armoury.

Blaze then goes to the meeting hall to request a meeting with Lord Roland.

Blaze is furious when he was denied the appointment.

" I really need a drink...."

He gathers his berzerkers to the tavern at Valonbay.

*At the tavern*

"Barkeep! Another barrel of ale!"

Most of his berzerkers were already drunk. Blaze is still sober, in fact, Blaze rarely gets drunk as he is good at drinking. As Blaze was drinking down his mug, past memories flooded him. He went outside the tavern to get some fresh air.

"The sky is very clear today......just like the day I was knighted, at this very city." Blaze thought.

Old Memories revisited him, when Lord Roland first sponsored him into the Dawn, he didnt agree much with Lord Roland principles. However, eventually he saw what was wrong with the Dawn. Even when the grandmaster Aranor, ordered no villages or people to be burnt without reason , many knights still did not adhere to that. When he was a just a retainer serving under one of Lord Roland's knights, he saw many things, inhumane that the Dawn did. The Grandmaster Aranor was a good man, but many was cruel and corrupted to the core. What is the point of orders if some people did not bother to follow them. However, he learn to keep his mouth shut..Eventually, he was knighted for his excellent melee combat and loyalty to Astrea. During the Invasion of Veccavia, he saw the better side of the Dawn, comradeship between knights was good, but Blaze and his berzerkers views are unchanged. The king ordered Grandmaster Aranor to crawl for disobeying orders, was a very very bad idea, causing the Red Dawn to split.Out of mess comes more mess....Lord Aranor was a good man, however, he was just unlucky in his opinion.

With a sigh, he reentered the tavern to join his Berzerkers.

“It has been good talking to you all but I have some matters to attend to”

Wolfarmin quickly leaves the meeting hall and goes to the tavern, as he enters the tavern a drunk man throws a punch at him and it lands on his jaw

Drunk man: I told you i would hit the next person who walks in.

The tavern falls silent until a man shouts thats a Dawn knight you fool, the drunk man falls to his knees and begs for his life

Drunk man: Please dont kill me i didnt know im sorry

Wolfarmin puts a fake smile on his face

Wolfarmin: Why would kill someone with hands as soft as yours

In a instant the tavern is filled with laughter and everyone continue with what they were doing, Wolfarmin then spots the person he was looking for, a woman that looks where blessed by Asteria, Wolfarmin makes his way to her and they begin a conversation that lead to other things, Wolfarmin then leaves the tavern and he and the woman take a ride on März around the countryside

Aranor calls an emergency meeting between 5 of the available knight-lieutenants.

"Listen men, as reports come in detailing the red dawn's zeal in coming nearer and nearer to Avendor, I have decided to send you all on patrols and deployments. Each of you will take 15 knights and 30 retainers to your deployment site. Then you will post sentries in the surrounding areas and warn the villagers to flee to Avendor to avoid the Red Dawn. We cannot force them to leave but we can sure as hell warn them."

Aranor then looks at the lieutenants-

"Rineheart, you will take your detachment to Ibiran and watch the plains.
Tristram, you will take your detachment to Avayburg, and watch the forests.
Henri, you will take your detachment to Branburg and watch the mountains to make sure that they don't come down and try to slip in.
Varnand, you will take your detachment to Stagheart, when your there inform the garrison of Kennet of the Red Dawn's intentions and try to enlist some help.
Edwin, you will take your detachment to Azgad, watch the coasts of the lake and the plains near Kennet, and make sure that none of them can slip in through the cracks."

The knight-lieutenants cross their arms and nod

"Remember lieutenants, the red dawn is our enemy, not the new dawn. Listen to my direct order, not one new dawn knight is to be harmed. Do you understand?"

The knight-lieutenants, without blinking all say "Sir yes sir!"

Following the meeting between Sir Aranor and his knight-lieutenants, a Sergeant walks over to Sir Aranor and speaks.

" Excuse me, Grandmaster. There is a young man here by the name of 'Weatherford' who wishes to seek an audience with you."

The Sergeant stands by for Sir Aranor's reply.

Aranor raises an eyebrow, that name was familiar, but the stress of past days has taken up his time and he couldnt be bothered to remember.

"Send him in."

The Sergeant bows to his Grandmaster.

"As you wish, Grandmaster."

The Sergeant then turns and heads to the chamber door. Upon reaching the door he opens it and invites the visitor in. A young man wearing engraved silver full plate armour nods to the Sergeant and enters the chamber. The Sergeant closes the door behind the man and whispers to him.

"Mind your courtesy, Sir. That is Grandmaster Aranor before you."

"Thank you, Sir." the visitor replies.

The young man approaches Sir Aranor and kneels before him. His resplendent armour shining brightly in the torch light and his blue and white cloak trailing behind him. He lifts his head to make eye contact with Sir Aranor while his eyes well up with emotional tears.

"My Grandmaster. Long have I waited to meet you. My name is Sir Henry Weatherford and I only recently joined the Holy Order of the Dawn. While in this short time I have been hearing rumors of a separation in the ranks. I do not believe what the other knights have told me. Could this benevolent order truly be crumbling? I...I have waited... so long for this moment. Please, say it isn't so... say it isn't so..."

With that the Young Knight weeps, knelt before his Grandmaster. Hoping to hear the rumors dispelled and his joy renewed with his new found comrades.

Varis paced around the war-room table at the Dawn Chapterhouse, quietly musing over possible plans to forward the war-effort. Looking over the large map covering western Sarleon and the Fierdsvain reach, he puffed away at his smoke pipe he drew an imaginary line across the parchment.
Avayburg to Ibiran, down to Branburg, curving across to Kennent Castle, finally ending on Azgad.
Over half our knights and retainers devoted to safeguarding the borders. The give and take of strategy: the Dawn is more than able to repulse a Red Dawn attack upon the territory, but such posture makes it impossible for a direct attack.
Time. Time must be what we are after. Time to consolidate our immediate holdings; deny the enemy strikes on our infrastructure. Security against the terror of the traitor Dawn.
Or perhaps such times were desperate, desperate enough to ally with the New Dawn based in Valonbray.
He put down his finished pipe on the table and walked to a nearby bookcase, where rested quill and parchment. He grabbed the two and brought them to a bare section of the war-room table. Standing, Varis scribbled down campaign plans as they came to him.

Aranor bids the man to stand up

"Our order has been split. 3 ways. The blinded of our order have called themselves the red dawn, and are burning villagers near Javiksholm and Windholm. The New dawn, led by Sir Roland, are virtous in their objectives, but left us in a bad time. The brave knights who have stayed with me are the loyal dawn."

Aranor puts his hand on the knight's shoulder and looks into his eyes

"I remember you, you used to be a tournament knight before you joined us. I beg you Weatherford, stay with us, not for me, but for the villages. I cannot allow the Red Dawn to continue their horrendous actions, but I need knights loyal to Astrea to assist me."
