Titles and Styles Empty
PostSubject: Titles and Styles   Titles and Styles EmptyMon Aug 06, 2012 1:57 am

Since the unification of Pendor involved a lot of old nobles and likely plenty of cultural-legal changes, I'm curious what the end result has been regarding titles. Basically, what is the precendence of certain noble titles now, and which ones does Pendor use? (IE Baron < Count < Duke or Thane < Jarl, etc.)

I imagine that even after the unification, many nobles prefer to use their old culturally-specific titles, like Jarl, regardless of whether Mordred attempted to impose uniformity. More importantly than their relative ranks, what styles do each title use? For instance, 'Your Grace' or 'Your Highness' for a Duke and such.

Certainly this would probably be the most tedious part of the Unification for Mordred... nobles love their titles and tend to hate any kind of lateral change to them. It makes you appreciate the Dragon Age nobility of Orlais. One Emperor got tired of the titles and so abolished everything but Lord/Lady. Anyway, is there a simplified 'list of nobility' or any such for Pendor?

At the least, what would we address certain existing characters as? Mainly the King, certain lords of cities, etc.

I'd say Your Majesty for the king. Also Your Royal Highness, for his family, too. Your Grace or Your Highness for dukes and equivalents (dux, earl/jarl). Milord for all kinds of counts, viscounts, margraves, marquis, etc.

King: Majesty

Royal Family: Highness

City-level Nobles: The specific title would likely remain culturally distinct, but how would they be referred to and addressed?

Castle-level Nobles: ?

Village-level Nobles: ?

What about the Grandmasters of each order?

Royal Family: Royal Highness

City level: They are dukes and equivalents, therefore Your Grace or Your Highness

Castle and village level nobles: There is no qualitative difference between them, I'd say, so I'd address then altogether as Your Lordship or Milord.

Emissaries and Ambassadors as well as bishops: Your Excellency

High Clerics (heads of churches), Grandmasters: Your Eminence

What about for those grandmasters that do not lean towards a religion or church?

All the same, I'd say. They are all heads of important institutions that are still independent of the feudal system.

Well then, it all looks great to me!

Thanks, Iskar.

Now let's plot for our take-over of Pendor. Suspect
