I guess that is all we can hope for now, Arundel replied with a friendly smile. Your work in saving the lives of my men is very much appreciated, Sir Noaidi. See how fast you can go with the wounded and follow us to the south.

He blew his clarion once - the signal to march off - and the force moved south towards the city. Sir Humphrey and his squad complied with their respective orders and approached the boats left by the cult and Arundel's own squad was sent onward to scout for the army.

[5 Clarion Call knights, 50 halberdiers, 100 archers, 100 spearmen set off to capture ships. 500 archers, 200 halberdiers, 5 Clarion Call knights moving south along the road for quicker movement.]

Aboard the Severus the tension had risen as each group left the flagship to capture yet another barque from enemy hands. Catullus eyed the seas with a glint of worry in the corner of his eye. He wasn't used to the sea or its ways, and to him it was Cultist ground. He very much didn't like this. Then he heard someone call for him. When he turned, Brutus was standing a few feet across, and red light danced on his cheeks.

"The barque is on fire, Carus."

Catullus turned to look.

"Shit," he hissed. That was the only thing he could think of. "They're putting it out. It's being put out."

Brutus didn't seem a bit less worried. "But where did the fire come from?" he asked, in tones of fear. Catullus began to feel a little sour in the stomach.

"Sorcery, Brutus, it's sorcery. Cultist witches, a priestess perchance, tossing fire at us from some ship of hers." He sneered towards the bulk of the Cultist fleet. "She's somewhere there. And when we find her, she won't be happy at all, no. Assuming it's a she. A man won't enjoy it a bit more, anyway."

Brutus stiffened, and his tone became stony.

"We'll be on the look-out for her, Commander."

In the north, the Silvermist forces march forward, their faces grim and determined to achieve the hard-fought victory. The bigger contingent moves quickly along the road but doesn’t reach the city of Cez. The contingent going to the beach finds that the cult hadn’t destroyed the traps in the water. Perhaps they were saved for later decommission or they hadn’t just cared. The Netherworld chargers were left to struggle against their chains. They wouldn’t listen to any of the people present.

Marcus’s army reaches the area between north and west gates of Cez. Cassian has brought some regiments of Immortals along with some units of Militia. A Silvermist Force was providing the men ranged support and Marcus gets to see the last cultist from the scouting party fall to Silvermist arrow. In the east, you hear a host approaching.

The Legion manages to capture a fourth Barque but the armada is now clearly aware of the hostile fleet. All the ships have become a flurry of activity. It remains to be seen, what they are going to do. Aboard the ship whose sails caught fire, the flames are put out. The culprit is found but Catullus wouldn’t know about that yet.

Man the boats! Humphrey commanded then turned to his knights. We will row slowly, each boat with three men with spears in front to check the water for hedgehogs. Should you still get too close to one, have the men use their spears and the oars to push the boat away from the obstacle.

Aboard the Severus, Catullus saw men quenching the fires with buckets of seawater, while one of his barques boarded yet another cultist ship. He commanded the flagship of the Shadow Legion's to-be-formed fleet onwards, steering clear from cultist ships, but moving to maintain a clear line of sight at the main fleet. Now he wished that he could've given further orders. Fire arrows at the fleeing ships' sails, for example. But they were experienced and resourceful, or so he hoped. Perhaps some could come up with ways of taking most of the fleet intact.

The Silvermist troops in the beach have no luck. The progress is slow and several boats neary sink through accidents. Some of them seemed to be damaged already and had to be left there. In the distance, the troops see the silhouettes of ships get away.

The other Silvermist force continues its fast-paced march and the walls of Cez become somewhat visible. The commanders continue to rally the forces to faster pace, for they had their duty to be done here.

Marcus' forces look at the battlefield. There are many bodies just littered there, mostly those of Snake Cultists. Cassian's troops seem to be re-orgaizing and a detachment of Silvermist Halderdiers led by a couple of rangers arrives from the south to help. The men can see the actual Cultist army marching from the sea toward Cassian's position. No shots are fired, but the Silvermists prepare for action.

In the sea, the situation keeps getting brighter. The armada seems to be fleeing, and the support of the Cultist army is broken. The situation soon turns grim as the biggest ship in the armada turns toward the Legion fleet. It is clearly fully armed and the flag of the army is seen in the mast. There would be only a single chance to make this battle succesful. The soldiers on Severus and the four other barques turn their ships forward to meet the new challenger.

Marcus

"Form phalanx in front of the silvermists!"

The order echoed from mouth to mouth as the centurions repeated it to the legionaries. Marcus was on horseback with the Centurions, carrying sword and shield with him into battle, and surrounded by twenty of his best men. Black and purple and the blue of the deep seas stood decorating their banners. He waited calmly for the Cultists to arrive, the fog obscuring his vision at distance. His head was throbbing, a shadow of an old wound. But he took the pain willingly, if it meant being alive.

Catullus

Meanwhile aboard the Severus, Catullus eyed the fleeing Cultist armada. He grinned, until the biggest ship turned. The flagship, from what he could gather.

"Take it head-on! This ship will be our trophy!"

The Legion-manned barques began to reel towards the huge ship. To Catullus, victory was definite. They had more men, experienced marines and trustworthy militia, and the Snakes couldn't have more than skeleton garrisons on their ships. He was old, but right then he felt thirty years younger, full of energy.

Near the Cez the combined forces of Silvermists, Shadow Legion and Cassian Dux organised themselves. While no communication has been established between the ‘southern and northern’ wing, the parties seemed to have a silent agreement on the formation. The Snake Cult Host is getting closer and there is no time for petty squabbles. In the distance you can see the army approaching, blocks of Armsmen in front.

In the sea, the large caravel continues to slowly accelerate. Closer inspection reveals that the edges are a tad bit too high for a proper boarding, but can be reached. This is the last chance to give specific orders to the ships, for it is unlikely that that a vessel like that is charging in completely unarmed.

The Silvermist force continues their march south but doesn’t reach the city of Cez yet. However, the walls have become more visible and the troops’ morale rises at the sight. They don’t yet see the Snake Cult Army that is moving away. The task force in the sea manages to navigate through the maze but is still rather far away from the actual engagement.

Spoiler:

OOC: The actual last battle will start next time, coinciding with my holiday from the duties of studying.

At first, Catullus is at loss what to do. He isn't a naval commander by profession, his skills as a commander notwithstanding. Still, a caravel moving toward a fleet of barques is very problematic and no obvious solution is available. Then one of the Marines suggests something.

"Sir, could we use ropes to swing ourselves to the ship? The masts should be high enoough for us to use to reach that caravel's board. We could also try to destroy its mobility and bring proper equipment later?"

The Silvermists and Shadow Legionnaires continue to form the lines against the coming Snake Cultists. They are moving fast for an army, and their direction has turned toward the lines of Marcus. The Silvermists behind them are in range, and the Clarion Calls are itching for a fight.

Meanwhile the reinforcements from north led by Arundel continue approaching the gates. He also manages to see glimpses of the moving Snake Cult army. The Silvermists in the sea is still attempting to reach the ships.

Catullus nodded. "Do it. Do whatever necessary to take it intact."

Marcus continues to hold the line, bulwarking the Silvermists from the oncoming Cultist army.

Arundel gave orders for his forces to turn west, attempting to get in the back of the Snake Cult army.

In the sea, the marines execute the boarding through ropes found in the ships. The progress is rather slow due to the lack of actions before-hand, but a steady supply of marines and militia continue boarding the caravel. Although Catullus cannot see it, the marine commander has noticed that the lower deck which has most of the Shadow Legion troops is rather empty.

In the south, the Silvermists decide to wait for a few seconds to get a better view of the enemy. They aren't very numerous in the front but the backside might host more, and possibly elite, troops. Arundel's detachment starts their pursuit while the sea detachments continues rowing to help the Shadow legion.

OOC: Roughly 30 marines and 100 militia are on the ship already
