Feudal substructure of a county

Although said structure does not have any direct consequences for the MD it might be interesting for roleplay and so I'm posting here what we have agreed on as a reasonable draft for it:

Each county either has a primary castle or city and then possibly a secondary castle plus the 'villages' that are noted on the ingame map. The latter should be considered to be rather important market towns than actual villages, which would be too small to be noted on the map. The same goes for knightly estates and wooden holdfasts whose role will be explained in an instant.

The county's ruler is a baron, count, margrave or duke. The one ruling the secondary castle is a baron if the lord of the county is count or above and a baronet paramount if the lord himself is only a baron.

Furthermore the primary castle or city of each county is the see of a bishop and the secondary castle and the market towns (the 'villages' on the map) are the seats of subordinate archdeacons of that diocese.

The lowest level of feudal organisation is made up by the estates of landed knights, which rule a larger village and its surrounding lands and farms each. Average population per estate + lands: 500.

Next come the holdfasts of the baronets, each of them commanding around five knightly estates as direct vassals. Average population of the holdfast and its town and lands: 1000

Therefore each baronetcy has (on average) 5 x 500 + 1000 = 3500 people.

Half of a county's baronetcies (rounded down) are direct vassals of the secondary castle's lord (if there is one), the rest pledges directly to the county's overall ruler.

Since the baronetcies account only for the rural population their total number is calculated from the non-urban population of a hex as noted in the master spreadsheet.

Let's look at an example:

Hex 60

Total Population: 56232 (from spreadsheet)
Urban Population: 22062 (from spreadsheet)
Rural Population = 56232 - 22062 = 34170

Castles: 2
Market Towns (as noted on the map): none so far

Therefore we have 34170/3500 = 9 (rounded down) baronetcies (= 45 estates and 9 holdfasts), one baronetcy paramount (Farhill Fortress) ruling 4 of the baronetcies, one bishop at the main castle (Eastcrown Keep) and an archdeacon at the other one (Farhill Fortress).

You can use this information e.g. when you want to roleplay calling your levies or to award minor titles to player characters and NPCs.
We'll see whether we can include the population numbers into the biweekly reports, so you can calculate your baronetcies yourself when needed.

Who can award which titles?

I'd say if you are at least 'baron' in terms of the MD ranks, then you can hand out all subordinate fiefs of the county (your fief) as you see fit and the titles are mostly tied to these subordinate fiefs. I.e. someone ruling a knightly estate is by virtue of this a landed knight. Technically you can name anyone knight or baronet, but choosing e.g. a commoner as baronet where you could have chosen one of your knights or a worthy nobleman from elsewhere might result in local relation penalties (-0.05 local nobility?). There are however limits to giving out titles. Imperial ones, i.e. proper lord titles starting from baron and above can only be given out by the king. So if you hand someone the secondary castle of your county that only makes him baronet paramount and you or him have to appeal to the king for elevation to baron once the ruler becomes a count (not before, mind you).
