A wrap up? Empty
PostSubject: A wrap up?   A wrap up? EmptyTue Sep 20, 2011 6:17 am

It has come to my attention that some of you are growing bored with this, and just want it to finish to get on with better things. So, if you all want, I can work on one big post to wrap everything up.

I've been doing very small pieces of the battle at a time so that you all have plenty of time to react to what's going on, and thus prepare yourselves. However, it seems like this is generating too slow of a pace for some of you. So, if I do just end the event that aspect will be completely taken out.

I'm just trying to get a feel for where everyone is. We can wrap this up quickly, with heavier (Or lighter, depending on what in IC actions would be) casualties to the Knighthood Orders and then you all can start getting to the Meta Game and (The much more well organised) mini-events, or we can play this out like we've been doing.

Thoughts, everyone?

PostSubject: Re: A wrap up?   A wrap up? EmptyTue Sep 20, 2011 6:25 am

I didn't think of a wrap up really when I uttered my slight discontent with the lack of progress. Yet we have already done so much, devised a good number of plans and ruses and nothing really happens. I would just like to see some effects, perhaps not major casualties among the Veccavi, but many of them being fatigued and disenchanted by escaping the burning ships being trapped on that beach for hours by a much smaller force, being shot at all the time, bombarded with burning oil and enclosed by fire, etc, if you catch my meaning.

In fact, I expected this event to be over soon, say two or three more posts by everyone, the reinforcements arriving soon and finishing the whole thing...

That is the disadvantage of the Silvermists at their core. They can plan, scout, wipe anything out in a skirmish, but in such a large battle it's hard to have much of a noticeable effect.

And, unless this were drawing on for hours and hours longer, I planned to leave fatigue out of it, because by now EVERYONE would be completely spent and ready to lie down for the night.

However, don't worry about morale. For each battle (This, and the Liberation event) I had "morale triggers" in place. With certain actions affecting morale X% so I am keeping track. You just haven't hit enough of the soft spots (And, as you said, the battle will be over soon, so I don't think you'll be able to break morale at this point.)

On the point of morale, there are also certain actions which have boosted their morale (Lighting the fire wall themselves gave them a boost, as they saw it as "foiling" the Pendor army's plan.)

I guess the frustrating part is that I'm leaving it all behind the scenes (Where I believe it belongs).

How would you all like a "Recap" thing though, where I can lay out the actual effects of the decisions you made, and decisions that I thought you could have made better? As a way to compensate you all for leaving you in the dark at the end of the battle.

That would be nice. Now you made me curious about what the "soft spots" of the Veccavi are.

Not being able to break morale means we have to kill them all, one by one? I had hoped they would surrender at some point, e.g. when most of the women are dead and only the kral and krom crap is left...

I said likely you wouldn't be able to break morale. Beating them back with brute force and gaining the upper hand will lower their morale too, if you managed it.

It's not quite discontentment from my part, it's more like a low morale from my character. We have done so much: scouted the area, got there on time, sprung traps, made the fake king's carriage ruse, charged them again, trapped them at three sides, offered a truce, burned them, burned their ships, threatened them with overwhelming wrath from the whole Pendor... but they just keep coming. It's just like trying to cut a river with a sword.

At this point I'm just out of ideas. I'll just keep shooting the army of infinite Veccavians until my fingers bleed or I die of heatstroke.

And it's not a problem with the pace, which is in my opinion good. It's just that it would be better to see practical effects of our actions, for good or for worse.

I personally liked the pace of the event(s). That it could not always progress as fast as everyone would have liked due to other responsibilities and needed preparation time is something that I expected. It is a pity, but in my opinion nothing serious. So if there still are moves of the Veccavi that we could react too, then I personally would like to play it out. At the same time, I do not see much more room for manoeuvres when it comes to my own forces. My knights are engaged in melee, the northern auxiliaries will soon be hit by the cavalry and the southern auxiliaries guard/maintain the firewall. I would not expect that there is much to decide for me, anyway, so if the others want to cut it short, I am okay with it.

I wonder, how many veccavians have we actually killed? It seem like we've killed only like 50 or so, and I know it's an invasion force, but we are the elite of the elite, and it's taking too long.

I think everybody is just afraid to make stuff happen because it will cause other effects, IE knights dieing, going against Pendor canon, may sound like we're metagaming, etc. We just need to kill this army as fast as possible, or we will never finish it. The reinforcements shoudl be here by now, and it will be a slaughter when they arrive. 500 honor troops annihilates everything. I have had only 300 in a game once, and I beat 1000 man Jatu armies and stuff with minimal casualties.

Let's just have them arrive and mop this up.

The preparations for the battle are in the 'Silvermist Camp' and 'The Army of the Shadow Legion' threads. After that the actual battle was played out in the 'Repel the invaders' thread. Mind, though, that at some point there was a little bit of confusion, especially the first arrival of the reinforcements did not happen actually. I guess you can get a better picture of this by reading the throne room reports on the Taleworlds forums thread 'Power struggle in the North', though the proper RP is definitely more epic.

Yeah, I wonder if we will have another of that.

If I were skilled enough in jokes and photoshop, I would make a summary for the campaign like these guys did.

Ursula says: It's mine, all mine [locks Ravenstern and swallows the key].
Mordred: Heh, whatever [calls in the 5000 and royal orders].

AT THE STORMCLIFF COVE:
The Endless Veccavian Army: life is good. On my way to disembark by surprise near Windholm and take over Pendor in a jiff...
Silvermist Traps: sprung!
Veccavians: what the hell was that?
Traps: sprung!
Veccavians: ...we are not alone. Watch out where you step, ladies.
Traps: sprung!

Fake king: tralala, here I am strolling casually by the shore.
Veccavian scouts: hey, is that a king?
Ambush: worked!

Veccavians: Ah, there they are. Fuck it. We are so many that we can crush them easily. Charge ahead!
Legion: We'll just stay here like an immovable rock of death.
Silvermists: We'll just keep shooting our endless bodkin arrows at both of your your flanks.
Eventide: And we'll charge in a suicide attack to protect the legion.
Traps: sprung!

Some hours (?) later:
Legion: okay, this is fun and all, but how many of you are there?
Veccavians: infinite.
Legion: great, we'll just keep felling you for now.
Silvermists: this is getting boring, let's use weapons of mass destruction.
Eventide: Eh, help...?

Makeshift catapults: we're awesome! shooting exploding oil barrels is the new trend. We don't even need those fancy engineer specialists.
Makeshift catapults: *break*.
Flammable oil: I'm everywhere, look at me and despair!
Silvermists: *shoot flammable oil*.
Veccavians: *shoot flammable oil*
Silvermists: WTF?
Veccavians:Gotcha.
Fire: burn, burn, burn everything!

PAUSE
Marcus: hey, Boadice has just killed your queen. Wanna give up and be friends?
Veccavian commander: Never.
Marcus: Fine.

Veccavians: *enter elite royal troops*
Vecavvians: give up, males.
Alliance: Oh, really? Very clever, we confess.
Legion: immovable rock of death, push forward! (but avoid the fire, please).
Silvermists: AAAHH! Charge!
Eventide: ...hello?...it's good we have thick armors...

*Reinforcements arrive*
Ravenspear: Oy.
Clarion Call: 'sup?
Windriders: Hey guys, whatcha doing?

Alliance: Not that we are asking for help or something, but silvermists are using swords in melee, the last surviving eventide are fighting on foot, the legion is killing by punching and shieldbashing, and we have no idea what is going on. We're not desperate at all. Not a bit.

This is how I remember it.

Perhaps someday some player will make pictures for it. I've laughted to death while writing that.

I'm pretty sure that some Pendorian playwright will soon present a play with these. It sound like Plautus' comedies.

Immovable rock of death is pretty much standard legion tactics at this point. My favorite was "Punches and shieldbashes" Laughing

I think I wasn't clear enough: from my character's point of view the last part of the battle was a complete mess, with everyone punching each other to death in a pool of blood and mud. My character was knocked out by a flying shield, thrown from somewhere. This is a better depiction of what really happened:

Veccavians: *enter elite royal troops*
Vecavvians: give up, males.
Alliance: Oh, really? Very clever, we confess.
Legion: immovable rock of death, push forward! (but avoid the fire, please).
Silvermists: AAAHH! Charge!
Eventide: ...it's good we have thick armors...

Veccavians: AAAHHHH!
Legion: AAHHH! DIE DIE DIE!
Silvermists: AAAHHH! WILLCUTYOURFACE!
Eventide: AAAHHH!

*Reinforcements arrive*
Ravenspear: Oy.
Clarion Call: 'sup?
Windriders: Hey guys, whatcha doing?

...I miss those times.
