"Join up with the regulars. I need you men to cover the sides of the regulars," William knew that this would form a mobile shieldwall with only the heads of the men open to arrow fire. There wasn't enough men to cover the heads, but this will have to do. "I will ride behind the shieldwall and once you engage in battle I will outflank our foe. Charge!"

The militia let out a ragged cheer and form on the wings of the regulars surging forward into the night. The ground darkens as they travel further from the Manor and its signal fires. The charge slows to a brisk walk after several eager militia stumble on the uneven ground. Greys horse fares better in the darkness, and he found he could maintain a healthy trot as he held his small force together. The smell of sulfur fills the groups nostrils as they reach where the archer had taken his shot, but the man is long gone, trampled grass carries away in two different directions, which was him leaving and which was him coming Grey cannot discern in this darkness. Halga looks to his lord for, taking out a torch and tinderbox. "I can find out which way he went Milord, with some light."

Time 11:15pm

Halga lights his torch as the men cluster around him with shields, several seconds pass with closed breaths as the light grows and the group is blinded momentarily. Halga moves towards one of the trails, the grass is crushed over facing towards the village, the trail by which he came, Halga points towards the other trail, the one the archer left by. A mans scream cuts the air, and Halga plunges the torch into the earth. Militia squeeze together in between the regulars shields outwards and over, some left on the ground. Spears razed and eyes darting wildly in fear. Grey tries to find the man who screamed beyond the shield wall, but the torch has ruined his vision and blackness permeates the ground before him. The force hides behind their shields for what seems like an eon, a minute passes by, two, but nothing breaks the silence. Grey can start to make out shapes again, and see's a militia man on the ground a few metres or so away from the shield wall, lying motionless.

"Go check that man! Is he dead?" William speaks as loudly as he dares in the hushed quiet that followed after the scream.

Sir Blackwood chose that moment to join his master. His bodyguards followed suit and took positions in his flanks. Sir Grey seemed to be occupied with something else, though, so Chonrad remained silent awaiting orders.

"Can you still walk? If so, get back in formation, if not, you can make your way back to the drill yard although I don't recommend that." William turned to see Conrad Blackwood and retinue join the formation. "Ah, glad you could make it Sir Blackwood, we need all the support we can get."

"Ah, I apologise for the inconvenient time, sir. We will join the retinue immediately."

Sir Blackwood motioned toward his two knights. He then realized something and followed.

"Also, would it be possible to receive a brief summary of the situation? I am afraid I am somewhat in the dark..."

William surveyed the two paths, one cut to the left and the other to the right. Neither were different in any major respect. "Take the right. Go slowly, keep alert.

The party travels silently down the path the archer left by. It continues straight away from the village, which has become a tiny dot of light in the distance. The wind has picked up, and coaxes the grass into whipping mercilessly at your legs, whilst the moon is strangled behind a cloud. Halga walks ahead, reading the ground, one hand on his sword. Around you, you make out the black monoliths that herald a small copse of pine trees, and the figure of a farmhouse. Nearly a kilometre further is the forest, the archers direction. The grass dies off underneath on great pine, along with the trail. Halga stops when the trail ends and walks soundlessly to Grey. "He must have spooked here when we lit the torch and that militiaman screamed." He whispers. He looks around the black shapes around him. "He's around here somewhere, grass is to long for him to have doubled back and snuck off without us seeing the trail."

The party splits off to search the secluded farm, the pines rustle overhead and the wind continues to blow through the tall houses. Two parties cover the entrance and exit of the farmhouse, one covers the barn, several men check in the chicken and pig pens. Lord Grey waits hidden under the tree's with Sir Blackwood, swords resting on their saddle. After two minutes, Halga jogs back to him. "The barn is clear, and the animal houses. Theres no path leading out into the grass, he must be inside the farmhouse. The men wait for you to give the order."

"Understood, gather the men outside the farmhouse, try to be as quiet as you can so that you don't alert him to soon. Once you get there block the entrances as fast as you can, then we'll burn him out."

The soldiers swarm around the house, covering all the exits as Halga piles up the firewood he finds heaped in a shed. The house itself is a modest two storey affair, constructed out of young pine and with a thatch roof, it would go up like an inferno. Halga strikes the flint against the tinder, flashing the surroundings with light, but failing to light a flame in the strong wind. Cursing softly he keeps striking the tinderbox, but the small flames he start quickly sputter out. The howling wind picks up further, and with it, it carries the damp warmth of rain. Lightning begins to crack on the horizon, followed by booms of thunder. Arching his body over the pile, Halga finally lights the wood, and the flames begin to grow agonizingly slowly. The soldiers around him pass on the word, and they grip their weapons and grind their teeth in anticipation. As the flames finally begin to greedily lick up the walls, the clouds begin to billow over to the party, the rain was minutes away. Halga turns to look to his lord for encouragement, and brings his hand up in a salute, in time with the lightning strike that hits a tree overhead, the ominous groan cracking of a collapsing tree, and a girls scream that shrills out from the burning farmhouse.

William watches in horror as the tree slowly falls and manages to croak out just loud enough for everyone to here.. "Everyone get out of the way of the tree, there's nothing we can do for the girl."

Grey can barely be heard over the groaning tree, however the soldiers need little incentive to dash out of the way. Thunder bellows overhead and the tree bends to snapping point, hungry clouds finally engulfing the moon above. Grey spies his soldiers around the house rushing around in confusion, just before the colossal pine crashes infront of him cutting off the soldiers at the house from the ones standing with Grey. Whinnying in fear, the tree sends both his and Blackwoods horses jolting backwards. Half the force standing with Grey sprint after him in fear, others begin climbing over the tree to the house. Thunder rolls across the sky again, and is now accompanied by bucketing rain. After a minute you manage to calm the horses, and the soldiers near you, nearly a quarter of your force, stand ready to follow, barely anything can be heard in the noise, but the glow from the house tells you that the fire has started to rage.

William can only watch in horror as the situation worsens. With only a quarter of his men able to hear let alone respond to a command because of the tree and the raging flame he knew that he would have to come up with a course of action quickly. "Men see if you can budge the tree so those trapped can get out! Quickly now, before the fire spreads."

Your men rush to try and shift the tree, however the ancient pine is too heavy. One man draws his sword and hacks away at the branches, quickly forging a way through. In the gap, you manage to see the now roaring house quite easily. Discarded weapons litter the ground and most of your militia are pulling out several members of the family inside, Halga and the regulars however cannot be seen from this side of the house. It is apparent that you can either dismount and crawl over the log, or ride around the other buildings and thick copse of trees, however in the blinding rain the prospect of getting lost is unenviable.

William weighed his options and realized that speed was of the essence. "Men dismount and climb over the tree as fast as you can. Time is against us."

Lord Grey and Sir Conrad scramble over the tree aided by the militia with them. As they approach the burning house the several regulars run over to Grey and inform him that Halga led the rest of the men out into the rain after the archer, past the burning farmhouse. Jogging around the side you can manage to see the trampled grass where the party left by to chase the archer. The rain is blinding and the glow from the house quickly fades to black, yet you can still follow the trail in the night. You pass two regulars tending over a militiaman on the ground, they mime the direction to keep going and turn back to their ward. After nearly five minutes jogging you manage to catch up to Halga, eight men in total formed in a ring around one man in light plate. A holstered bow on his back and sword in his hand.

William joined the ring of his men and stared into the deep eyes of the man they had been chasing, he looked like a boy who had just been caught by his mother after doing something bad, he was a man who knew he was caught.
William slowly walked towards the center of the circle where the man stood and stopped just beyond where a sword could reach. "I have men surrounding you on all sides, you cannot escape. Do you surrender? If you do you will be fairly tried and if found guilty will have to serve some time in the dungeon, as you have not actually killed anyone this day, and after you have served your time will be free to go."

As you approach you notice the mans hunched stance, with his free hand on his side, he backs away slightly as you approach and raises his sword. The rains pelts down around you, your fellow soldiers several metres away can only just be seen. You scream out your demands, but you can't tell whether he heard you or not. You stand with your weapon drawn waiting for his response, when you notice him about to sneeze, his sword sways, and he's only a short distance away...
