| Heinrich saluted and said "My lord! As you order."
He rearranged his armor pieces, seeking a comfortable fit, then barked orders to his men, lounging around the estate.
"Get ready to march! Lord Stackford wants to finish this quickly!'

| When the sixth day dawned, many of the Stackford soldiers complained of sickness. Gambling that it would be just a passing matter, Sir Laurence ordered preparations to continue, but as the morning passed it became clear that the disease would not quickly go away.
A hardened campaigner, Sir Laurence called off the march; he had seen all too well what disease could do to armies on the march. So the Stackford force would wait.
On the seventh day, Lord Horace Stackford died, unable to survive the coma at his age. Belmonfaire took on colours of mourning, and the people were drawn closer to their new Baronet (as Sir Laurence now was in truth) by shared grief, their losses with his own. Messages were sent - the Archdeacon was summoned for a funeral the next day, though none knew whether he would come. A letter would eventually reach Sir Robert Stackford, telling him of his grandfather's death and his advancement to heir.

| Day 8: MiddaySir Laurence received a letter from Sir Nickolas Ballard. It took him some time in thought to prepare his response. - Letter to Sir Nickolas:
To Sir Nickolas Ballard I would gladly meet to discuss this matter further, but there is news of a large Singalian band threatening our borders. The escort you have suggested is not sufficient, and yet I will not leave my people undefended by taking more. If you wish me to come before I have dealt with the Singalians, you must send an additional honour guard. Also, you must know that we mourn my father, Lord Horace Stackford, today. There will be no march until his honours are completed.
Sincerely, Sir Laurence Stackford, Baronet of Belmonfaire.
Day 8: Late afternoonThe preparations for the funeral were almost complete by the time Sir Laurence received the letter from the Archdeacon. Under his breath, he spoke: "A shame. He would have wanted the Archdeacon to send him off, not a lesser priest." He left unsaid, even so quietly, his musings on why - Lord Horace had always plotted perhaps more than was honourable. His response was short. - Letter to Archdeacon Ferrand:
To Archdeacon Ferrand Astigi, of the Church of Eunomia Stabilis I am saddened to hear that you will not be coming.
We will speak again soon. Sir Laurence Stackford, Baronet of Belmonfaire.

| Day 9: Morning
Sir Laurence sent out a number of scouts to find the Singalian force. His troops readied themselves, knowing they would be marching soon; swords were sharpened, crossbows checked and rechecked, supplies gathered and repairs made.
