Day 4, After Midnight

Nickolas arrives in Yaragar. He quickly dismounts and leads his horse to the stables, and then Nickolas heads straight to the Great Hall, motioning for Yagiz and company to follow him. Once there, Nickolas inquires a nearby guard of Thedric's whereabouts.

"I know you are not meant to talk while on duty, but where is Baronet Thedric? I have several guests and a matter of great importance to discuss with him."

Nickolas hoped that the meeting taking place late at night wouldn't be much of an issue. He felt confident that the mercenaries will be able to handle themselves for a while longer.

The guard blinked before speaking, slightly surprised to see the the knight leading a force of armed me into the courtyard. He hooked a thumb over his shoulder towards the door.

Lord Baras is inside the armory last I heard. Something about his wargear and wanting to see it readied

He looked over Nickolas's shoulder at the mercenaries.

Who are they?

When the guard asked about the mercenaries, Nickolas replied, "Possible allies for Yaragar's cause. The matter of their employment is what we wish to discuss with him.

If it is not so much to ask, can you notify him of our arrival? I'll stay here with mercenary company."

Of course sir. Just a moment.

The guard left his post by the door, leaving Nicholas and the other two there with the mercenaries.

The guard picked his way through the corridors before pushing open the heavy door of the armory, causing Baras to turn around from his spot inspecting his freshly prepared heraldric mail and plate. A heavy looking warhammer sat on a table beside the armor stand.

What is it that you want?

Sir, Sir Nickolas has returned with, as he puts it, "potential allies".

Then show them in.

The guard bowed his head slightly before beginning his journey back towards Nickolas and the mercs.

Upon receiving word that they were permitted to proceed, Nickolas led the mercenaries to the armory where Thedric was located.

When Nickolas arrived, he cut straight to the point. "Greetings, milord. I have convinced the mercenaries to come here to Yaragar to continue negotiations. I did not have knowledge of our funds and I fear that business is not my strong suit.

I initially offered 1500 gold with the normal additions, lodging and the right to keep obtained loot, but Yagiz declined. He did not make a counter-offer, so I opted to lead them here to continue negotiations. I hope you find my efforts acceptable."

Nickolas then fell silent, waiting for Thedric to reply or Yagiz to introduce his merry band of mercenaries. However, after introductions it was likely that Nickolas would merely attend this round instead of actively participate in it.

Baras nodded at his Knight. Very good Nickolas, you did well. I'm surprised that you managed to find them this quickly.

Turning back to Yagiz, Baras looked him up and down once, trying to get a measure of the man. He looked like a D'Shar, but if he was honest with himself that hardly mattered, though he had always heard stories of the D'Shar raiders of the steppes.

So you are Yadiz correct? Welcome to Yaragar. Might I know the names of the rest of your company?

Yagiz scowled for a moment and crossed his arms.

"No it is Yagiz. With G. I will forgive your foreign tongue for not comprehending though."

Looking at his group.

"This is Mara and Rana, my women beautiful as they are. The men are less mine. They follow but are not me or mine. Let us see."

He claps his chin and squints as if focusing heavily. Using his other hand he pointed them out one by one.

"That one is Hensley, him Theodric, is Forgath, is Yaevin, is Dead Tom. I think the fat one is Bosley. He is The Bastard, is Seltkirk, is Khadan, and finally he is... he is..... Well he is Nameless One now. Really doesn't talk enough, quite frustrating."

"A company without a name as well. They opposed Yagiz and Minions thus I had little other ideas."

His grin crept back across his face.

A pleasure to meet you all, I assure you. Now let us get down to business shall we? I understand you did not accept Nickolas's offer out of hand and wanted to negotiate some. So that is why we are here, let us negotiate on terms and should you find them acceptable we might be friends. If not then maybe lesser friends.

Baras leaned back against the heavy table and crossed his arms.

Can I offer you something before we begin? Food or wine? Your company is welcome to head to the inn in town if you wish, so that we might discuss this.

Merclan arrives after midnight, padding into the courtyard with his adventurers and patiently asking for the guard to announce him.

The guards were clearly uncomfortable. First a mercenary company and now a quintet of adventurers in armor with weapons? It was agitating them. One of the trio by the door headed off around a corner as the other 2 kept an eye on the adventurers. zThey did not say anything until the guard who had left returned with another 5 men, 2 rgulars and 3 militia of Yaragar, taking the total up to 8 men, 5 regulars and 3 militia.

Sir, who are you and what do you want?

Merclan sniffles unhappily and suppresses a yawn. Nudging his horse forward next to the guard he leans down and pats him companionably on the shoulder, all the while favouring him with a horrific grin. "Listen shit shoveler, I am Sir Forn Merclan, and I would dearly like to meet with your lord about a business deal that could work in his damn favour, now i already asked the other idiot to announce me, and if you keep wasting my time you can explain to his lordship why the adventuring company left without talking to him." Merclan rights himself in the saddle and takes out his pipe, thumbing some brown leaves in and drawing deeply. "Get all that?" He asks sweetly, looking at the massed force of peasants on the doorstep. "Look dickheads if I was going to attack I wouldn't announce myself."

A few of the younger guards looked like they wanted to say something, but the older veteran who had spoken gave them a glare that caused them to shut their mouths.

Very well. Lord Baras is in a discussion with another mercenary group right now. You can wait until they are finished or I can take you to see them now.

"Yagiz will take wine for he and his women as well as his following men. They will be staying. Yagiz would be foolish to let his men go after all."

While awaiting he took the liberty of finding a seat and taking it for negotiations. His men began milling about the room while Mara and Rana hung close to Yagiz. As he sat he twirled the end of his mustache.

"Now you man there does not make necessarily bad offers but they are flawed for me and mine. Mercenaries do not get hired for cushy jobs many times more than not and he promises many cushy things. And your man is not the one with the song of much gold either or of which has words than contain power of promise."

Baras sent word to the kitchens via squire to bring out a few cases of good vintage from Ethos before continuing. He could feel a headache coming on from deciphering the D'shars speech.

I see. So you think that I couldn't find you a cushy job at all? I doubt that, but if I hired you I'd get use from you and your men, that is for sure. So let me pose you this question. What do you want for your services? That seems like a good starting point.

Outside, the guard nodded. Fine. You and one other can come, the rest stay outside.

"Yagiz tends to work for around 2000 gold. Your man offers 1500 and accommodations. As a mercenary accommodations will likely be trees and forest. This makes Yagiz sad as Rana has a bad back. To poor for the ground though she rides her horse well."

He looked to Rana and she responded.

"Oh yes I fear I've rested on a few on a few to many rocks. Or perhaps it was the spear to the back. It's hard to tell these days."

As she gave a coy smile and fluttered her eyelashes Yagiz merely grinned.

"Likely the spear Rana. Yagiz has known many rocks after all, though his back is rather mighty."

Turning back to face the fine lord.

"But 1500 is quite low even just so with accommodations, a weak clattering of gold. I may afford better accommodations with the missing notes to my normal song as you may see. So I seek the full band jaunty and true as you may expect. Unless you have better notes? But Yagiz does like his usual favorites."

Baras simply looked at Yagiz for a moment after hearing his proposition. As a pair of pages came through the door with the wine he poured a glass for himself, Yagiz, and his 2 women before resuming his position by the table and motioning for the rest of the mercenares to drink their fill from the cases. He had frowned slightly as Yagiz had listed his price and shunned 1500 seeing it as a paltry sum. It didn't sit well with the merchant but he didn't let it show.

No. I cannot pay you what you ask. My knights offer shall stand however. I have no idea what kind of people you have served in the past, but I do not expect those who work for me to sleep in a forest. Unless it was on campaign where I would be right alongside them.

As dfor the cost of 2000, if I had met that I would have expected something like a fine display of military prowess. I have not heard of your mercenary band before, so what leads you to ask for such a high price?

Baras knew that if that question was asked in an insolent tone it could be taken as an affront to this mercenary captain and his troops skills. Fortunately, years of haggling with merchants and talking circles around mercantile opponents had taught him how to master his tone. To Yagiz it would have sounded like what it was, an innocent question of a potential employer.

Merclan smiles and dismounts, Yirimir does the same without a word. Handing his reins to his eldest son Tower he grumbles his instructions: "Bugger off Piglets and find me a bed for the night." Merclan and Yirimir enter the fort, a servant points the way to the armoury through the hallway. Merclan pauses outside the door, making a show of spitting in his pipe to quench the flames and levering whats left into a pouch, but catching the Mercenaries demands, making the occasional face at Yirimir. After Sir Baras counters the mercenaries offer, Merclan slammed open the door, more forcefully than needed and strides inside with a smile to contend Yagiz's.

"Milord Baras!" He cries with joy, looking almost a jolly fat man. However his beady eyes never seemed to join in with his smile and the wind had brightened his scarred right side of his face, which glowed a patchwork red. Yirimir shadowed him inside and curtsied demurely to Sir Baras, but keeping her gaze warily on Yagiz. "I am horrified to hear what happenned to dear Lord Kelredan!" Merclan booms, with the barest flicker of annoyance at Yirimir. "In such dangerous times honorable men must help one another. So good for you to have aquired some." He grins horrifically, baring his mangled jaw and sizing up Yagiz.

Yagiz straightened in his chair and seem nearly pensive for the moment scanning his eyes across this new entry. Once he seemed done he merely recline in his chair resting his hand across his chin and mouth saying nothing.

Baras's eyes narrowed a fraction. Squire Yorin had some explaining to do when he returned.

I see. As you can tell I am in negotiation with another at the moment. I could guess at your reasons for wanting to meet me but I'd like to hear them from you.
