After being away from his lands, it was good to be back in the familiar. Sir Baras sank into his chair in his study and pulled a tome of records towards him, scanning across the newest entries that had been added while he was away. Everything seemed in order with the finances and business of the baronetcy, that was most excellent.

He pulled some paper towards him and scrawled a request for the resident landed knight of Yaragar to come to the manor as soon as was possible. Sealing the letter with wax and stamp of the signet ring on his hand, he summoned one of the squires of the manor. Handing it to the young man, he gave him explicit orders to find Sir Weiherr as soon as possible.

Later that day just before dawn the Knight arrived. He entered the main hall and strode straight towards his liege Lord sitting on his throne. He was clad in heavy armor and his sword hang to his left, he was sweating visibly and his were fixed on Sir Baras. He knelt down just a few meters in front of him.

"My Lord, I arrived as fast as I could, my apologies for being late."

He held his head low waiting for him to say something.

Rise, rise Sir Weiherr. We are not going to stand on formality at the moment, there is much to be done and you arrived in a short time; that is all that matters. I'm sure you have heard of the passing of the Baronet of Kelredan without an heir, which means we have an interesting opportunity. Sir Baras sat up a bit further in the throne.

As I understand it we are in a middling position, and need something to tip the balance in our favor. As a landed Knight have you heard of anything entering the region that might fit that description?

Sir Derreck stood up and faced his lord directly.

"I have heard some talk among my men but waited for confirmation by your side. I am very sad, he was a great man and Kelredan will miss him."

The Knight closed his eyes and mourned in silence for a few seconds.

"I haven't heard of anything could help us from the outside. I think we have to help ourselves. The only way to gain access to Kelredan is through it populace. We have to show that we can help them best, and we can only do that if we show ourselves. Furthermore you could use your contacts with some Sarleon merchants to our benefit."

Sir Derreck lowered his head again and thought for a second.

"Now that I think about it, I heard about a mercenary company which entered the area around Sarleon some time ago. But I don't trust these kind of people, they only fight for money and they have no honor."

Baras rubbed his jaw as he considered this information.

Don't discount mercenaries out of hand my friend, they have their uses. They can undertake the more dangerous work I would rather not leave into the hands of my levies. In any case it is worth considering, no resource should be left untouched at such a volatile time as this.

Baras was quiet again for some time, his mind racing through his mercantile contacts in Yaragar, Sarleon and the other Baronetcys.

You are quite correct, this is the time for favors to be called in, if for no other time. I have nothing else for you at the time save for this. I want you to find the Household Knights of Yaragar, Sirs Carax Bouss and Nickolas Ballard. Have them come meet me as soon as possible too. Their insight on this might prove useful as well.

"Very well my Lord, I will sent for them immediately." Sir Derreck nodded and turned to leave. Half way between his lord and the door he turned around again.

"My Lord, with your leave I would like to take my milita to Kelredan and show our presence in the area. I don't think there will be much time before the others travel to Kelredan."

Baras nodded at his vassals wise choice.

Make it so Sir Weiherr, that is a good decision. Take your men and see if you can aid the peasantry, hunt down some bandits and keep the area stable. I won't have some bandit Warlord pop up if Yaragar has anything to say about it. I will keep my personal levies here to maintain order and keep watch.

Sir Derreck smiled and nodded, he turned around again and walked out of the room. Just outside he called for his squire.

"Find Sir Carax Bouss and Sir Nickolas Ballard, Lord Baras wants to see them immediatly, sent out messengers and ask their family where they wanted to go. When you have done that prepare my militia, we will march at first light to Kelredan."

His Squire rushed away in front of him, he was out of the room even before Sir Derreck moved an inch.

Baras looked at the note for a few moments before returning his gaze to the messenger.

You will not move, I have a reply.

Getting up from the throne of the main hall, Baras went to a small alcove in the wall behind it, a desk with papers, ledgers, inks and parchment, the weapons of trade, sat. Dipping a quill in ink he scrawled out a reply in handwriting that could have been anyone's, not using the penmanship that was present on so many mercantile documents in the region.

Walking back to the messenger he returned the note he had delivered not five minutes ago.

Return this to the sender and do not tarry. A few copper coins were pressed into the mans hand as well, not much, but enough to buy a mug of decent ale at a respectable tavern.

The reply on the note read:

After watching the messenger leave, Baras turned back to his hidden desk, pulling another piece of parchment towards him and writing more, this time in his recognizable hand. Finishing quickly and sealing it with wax and another stamp of his signet ring, he went and once again found one of the squires that were standing around the Main Hall on duty.

Your job is to find the adventurer company that has come onto these lands and deliver this to the person in charge and only the person in charge. I would not fail in this venture if you favor your chances of becoming a Knight of Yaragar one day young man.

The squire nodded in understanding, taking the letter and departing from the Main Hall and manor quickly, riding off down the main road at a decent clip.

Day 2: Noon

Nickolas and his squire reached Yaragar without much trouble. The only opposition they had during the night was sleep and a very small band of outlaws that fled at the sight of steel.

Nickolas and Robert went to the stable and fixed their steeds, before Nickolas sent Robert to do one last task.

"Robert, inform Thedric of our pressence. Afterwards, you are free to do as you like for the time being. I need to rest..."

Robert sent off to inform Thedric, and after the task was done Robert himself also retired to his quarters.

Dusk had settled on Yaragar by the time Carax made it to the small town with his squire. He reined in, jumped down from Luck, and said:

"Jon, please inform Lord Thedric of my presence. I'll tend to Luck."

Jon left immediately towards the keep, while Carax began to guide Luck to the stables. Soon enough, a stableboy came running.

"Feed him, though don't let him get a sight of carrots or sugar. He'll go crazy if that happens. His name's Luck, so you can try that to calm him down if he gets wild."

The stableboy swallowed. "As you say, m'lord."

Carax turned away and set off towards the town's only inn, the Knight's Companion. By the time that Jon returned, he had already rented rooms for both of them. It took nearly all of his savings to do so, and he sincerely hoped that this valiant knight of Yaragar was also generous to the boot. Otherwise he might starve to death before ever getting to lift his sword in his name.

Day 2: 12:30PM

Baras had been, as usual, at work managing his holdings in his lands when Robert had entered his study and informed him of his master's arrival. He had nodded and sent the young man on his way before writing a short missive for the Knight and sending it with one of the dwindling number of squires in the manor, instructing him to deliver it in a non obtrusive way, as Robert had informed him of the travel he and his master had done to reach Yaragar so soon. The squire had decided to shove it under the door to Nickolas's room, the tan parchment standing out amid the darker stone and wood of the floor.

The Missive read:
Spoiler:

Day 2: Carax's arrival + 20 minutes.

Sir Baras had been reading a tome from one of the new authors of Sarleon, a tale of battle from King Mordred's Unification War in which the current claimant of Belmonfaire had a minor part in the story. He looked up as one of the town guards knocked on the door frame and entered.

"My lord, the second of the free Knights has arrived."

"Ah, very good. If you would please inform him that I wish to see him at his leisure, I would be most grateful."

"At once sir."

The guard made his way back to the building he had seen the knight enter and inquired as to Sir Carax's whereabouts. Directed to his room he knocked on the door and waited for a response.

Carax opened the door and was surprised to see a guardsman there. He hadn't expected the Lord of Yaragar to be so fast in his actions.

"You have a message?" he said, smiling faintly.

"The Lord of Yaragar would ask you to see him at your leisure. He awaits in his chambers. "

Carax's smile took in a relieved hue.

"Thank you. I'll see him at once."

He followed the guardsman back to Thedric.

Baras looked up from his book, closing the thick tome with a solid thump when he saw who was returning.

Sir Carax! It is good that you have come. I must admit I did not expect you to come immediately. Please, sit.

The Baronet gestured to a chair across the table from him.

May I offer you anything before we begin our talk? Food? Wine perhaps? We recently received an excellent vintage from the river trade of Ethos.

"Thank you. A small cup, mind. I don't want to get drunk before sleep."

He turned his eyes at Baras. There was a steely look in them, though he was smiling.

"But pardon me, m'lord, I'd like to get straight to business."

Baras spoke as he poured a small measure of red wine into a simple earthenware cup from a simple looking carafe.

Of course, I am in a similar state of mind at the moment. I saw you at the court of the Baron, so I don't have to waste our time telling you what you already know. What I asked you here for was to get your opinion on my rival claimants, what you think of them and this situation altogether. After that, i have a proposition for you to consider.

Baras handed Carax the cup before returning to his seat, giving him an expectant look as he waited patiently for his guest to speak.

Day 2: Carax's Arrival + 60 Minutes

...The man watched in horror as his manor fell into ruin. The estate itself was engulfed by flame, and the shouts of triumph of the angry mob echoed into the sky. Only the castle walls stood steadfast against the roaring blaze, and the treacherous captain unveiled his prize for all to see.

The girl could do nothing. She only heard tales of warrior queens and knights, but never received any training in such. She was forced on top of the ramparts, and the mob below jeered and mocked her and the family she represented. If only they could comprehend that the plague wasn't anyone's fault. And then... And then......

The last things he heard was her screams, wanting her father to be there to protect her. The knight could do nothing but ride away...

* * *

Nickolas awakens from his slumber, pale as the winter snow. So many have died, and with a new war on the horizon, more shall fall. He steeled himself, and drank from a nearby mug filled with clean water, no doubt left there by Robert before he retired.

The weary knight shifted his gaze over to the door, where he found a parchment detailing that Thedric of Yaragar has received word of their arrival and would like to meet at the earliest convenience. Doing so now would be beneficial, it would divert Nickolas' attention from reliving his personal hell.

As Nickolas left his room, he inquired with a passing squire of Thedric's current whereabouts. It so happens that he is currently in a session with Ser Carax, a free knight Nickolas had the pleasure of drinking with in the tavern the day before. The squire led Nickolas to the room where the two were convening, and Nickolas waited outside the chamber to be granted permission to enter.

As he waited for Sir Carax to speak, Lord Baras spotted the shadow cast by the torches in the hall of someone standing outside the door. Clearing his throat, he then spoke up.

Upon hearing his name and being urged to enter the chamber, Nickolas does so. He sits down at the table and enters the conversation.

"Thank you. Now, I believed we had things to discuss, possibly concerning the matter of Kelredan? Also, Ser Carax, it is nice to see you again. I would ask how your endeavors progressed in the tavern, but we should save that for a later date."

Sir Baras reclined back a bit in his chair, sweeping his gaze over both of the knights for a moment before steepling his fingers in front of him.

I will pose you the same question Sir Nickolas, and after I have heard what you both have to say, I will also offer the same proposition to the both of you at the same time. Now then, as for the question I have already asked it of Sir Carax, but he is currently in thought. I pose it to you as well Sir Nickolas, what is your take on the events and claimants on Kelredan? Speak freely and do not be afraid of offending me, I welcome the insight of both of you.

"Compared to the others, your holdings seem to be the weakest. Your possible friend, a mutual accomplice of ours, could turn the tides... but I am not entirely sure if I want to fight a losing battle, if you allow me to be so blunt."

He licked his lips.

"I do want to stay alive to protect my family, after all. Speaking of family, if I do fight for you, it is most certain that their homes will be raided and burned. If you would be so kind to... provide new houses for them and me, perhaps I could even fight for you. Even in a losing battle."

Carax smiled cunningly.

Baras nodded, the thought had occurred to him and to be honest he had thought that offering room and board to knights under his banner was one of his obligations as their Lord.

I can understand your concern, though I hope that this situation is resolved before any violence comes from it. I was unaware that you had a family, but I would be more than happy to provide you and your family with lodgings and board. There are some rooms inside the manor walls that I believe you might find acceptable. If worst comes to worst I doubt there will be a safer place in all of Yaragar for them.

However, if I do this I would ask you take this proposal I bring up seriously. Become one of my sworn men, a Household Knight for Yaragar. Tie your family to my lands and I believe both of our lines would prosper in the future.
