PostSubject: District 1: Actions   District 1: Actions EmptyTue Nov 08, 2011 10:17 am

((New RP started here!))

Summary: Varys is going into District One with only his trusted friend, Rocorad. Azlanek has promised reinforcements once some Knights in Singal return to the chapterhouse, and Varys will have to make do without them. Once he conquerors the sewers, the reinforcements will hopefully be on the way.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The door of the local tavern opened, and three men in dark clothes stepped inside. The headed to a secluded table, and one of the men began talking;
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Rocorad said, "Here is all we have so far on District One."

Info on District One ATM:

District One is currently not controlled by any major populations. It borders the Eventide Chapterhouse, and no one knows for sure who holds influence here.

Varys frowned. He had recently returned from a successful mission, but the high was slowly wearing off. He had work to do, and it was sure to be tiring.

Varys murmured, "I wonder how this mission will go...I hope I will forgo any surprises. Haruch, are you ready to begin the scouting? Rocorad and I will be accompanying you, but we will rely on you to guide us."

Moved this to its own thread so things remain a bit more tidy. ~ Iskar

In the ragged establishment with the fitting name "The Rat and Rabble", that served as the local substitute for a proper tavern, Varys, Rocorad and Haruch sat at their table. They sipped at their ale from time to time while listening to the chatter around them all the time, hoping to get any useful information about the district's general situation.

...

It's over, my wife has found out, finally.

Oh my, about your affair with Serlina?

Nah, the one with Agheza.

...

Have you heard? There is a new preacher in town.

You mean Father Illacus from the cult of Damia Provideo?

No, not that old twit. I am talking about the priest of Vata.

Ah, now I know. Think I've seen him yesterday, preaching something about holy horses with fiery eyes and grandiose gesture.

...

Captain Dhez'ral has seized another smuggler this morning.

Yes, I've heard so. He is really strenuous.

...

Father Illacus managed to convert some old widow to the cult of Damia Provideo yesterday!

Really? He has been here for twenty-five years now and his converts still do not exceed that number.

Haha, true!

...

I saw a watch patrol descend into the sewers again this morning.

Captain Dhez'ral seems quite intent on cleaning the underground of this district as well as its daylight part.

...

The day had been hot and the evening was still warm, as the sun slowly sank below the western city wall. While the bright colours of Singal's days faded to numerous shades of grey and shadows grew longer and longer Celdiur walked towards the Rat and Rabble, where he hoped to meet Ser Varys.
Nearing another corner he heard excited voices.

That's rotten, I want my money back!, said Margaret Thatcher. [OOC: that was just so tempting Very Happy ]

You bought it at noon! Now it's almost past nightfall. You will not get a single dirham from me!

I'll set the city watch on you!

Just you try!

I will, but first you will feel my fists!

Celdiur stopped dead in his tracks, all thought of Ser Varys, the Rat and Rabble and a cold tankard of ale quickly vanishing from his mind. He gave the two an inquisitive glare, a facial expression he had grown quite adept at over the long years serving the Church. He sized the two up from head to toe. Neither looked particulary remarkable to him.

Typical. Just another back alley con merchant extorting yet another of the city's downtrodden populace, Celdiur thought to himself bitterly. No matter how long he had spent in Singal he still had no stomach for its corrupt ways.

He shook his head and was about to resume his journey when the threat of violence found his ears. Turning again to face the arguing pair, Celdiur decided to intervene before blood was spilled uneccesarily. Astraea knows that occurs too often in this city already. Approaching the two, his hand resting upon his sword, Celdiur announced his presence with a calm yet commanding tone.

"A fine evening to you, my good sirs. Or it least it shall be when violence no longer threatens to disrupt the ambience!. Pray tell me my friends, what could possibly cause two men like yourself to wish pain and misery upon the other?"

Celdiur surveyed them both carefully, awaiting their response.

He sold me a rotten goose! the angry customer exclaimed, waving the corpus delicti in front of Celdiur's face. When I took it home and my wife wanted to take out its liver to make a pasty of it, we found out it had already been opened and all entrails were gone!

Bah, that goose was quite fine when you bought it! I bet you took out the entrails yourself and now you want to resell an empty goose, the merchant responded agitatedly.
Suddenly realising he was without need defending his cause to a stranger he looked at Celdiur closer, noting the sword with a slight lift of his brow.

Anyway, who are you to care for our business?

"A knight of the Eventide, and a servant of the one true Goddess, Astraea" Celdiur proclaimed proudly, his grip subconsciously tightening around his sword at his words.

"A man who cares a great deal about the people of Pendor, may I add, one who is obliged to aid those in need wherever I find them" he stated, his words aimed at the merchant, clearly irititated by the man's unwelcoming tone.

"And a man that does not take kindly to being lied to" Celdiur added with a hint of a snarl. Celdiur felt something stir within, that same anger that consumed him those many long years ago in Rivelothe. Quickly regaining his composure, his concentration returned.

Celdiur's gaze returned to the merchant, untrustworthy and sly was he, Celdiur could feel it.

"Your tone seems awfully agitated my friend. Especially for a matter as trivial as the one at hand. Care to enlighten us as to the reason why? he stated, indicating towards the other man. Again his hand tightened around the hilt of his sword, this time making a show of it.

Awfully agitated? Trivial matter? Have you ever earned your money as a merchant? I have to live on the revenues of my merchandise, and this man is trying to cheat me out of my earnings!

"Hmm. We shall see" Celdiur said suspiciously, before turning to the other man, that same inquisitive look returning to his features.

"You. What proof do you have that this man is trying to swindle you? Blind accusations will get us nowhere, my friend" Celdiur paused, "And for how much money, if he truly is trying to swindle you?"

Turning his gaze once again to the merchant, Celdiur glances over his wares upon the stall.

"Perhaps you wouldnt mind showing me your geese stock? Perhaps even sell me one?". Celdiur wached him with intent, studying his reaction to his request, at the same time waiting to hear what the commoner has to say.

The customer answered first.

Oh, well, the goose was ten denari and you can ask my wife, she opened it.

Ten denari? You liar, I sell my geese for seven denari each! And yes, he said turning back to Celdiur, you can have a look at my geese, if you accompany me to my home! Nightfall is near and as you see I was so lucky as to sell all geese I brought to the market today.

He pointed at the empty baskets behind him.

Celdiur frowned upon hearing both replies. Still no evidence to support either of their claims, he thought to himself, frustrated. He did however note some hesitation in the commoners reply, casting the shadow of suspicion upon him. But still, no solid proof to accuse either of lying. He was not about to pass judgment lest he place the guilty verdict upon the wrong man. And he did not wish to keep Varys waiting any longer. He composed himself, and sighed in acceptance.

"Your right, my friend. Night does quickly approach and no sane man would cherish the thought of traversing Singal's streets in darkness".

Celdiur eyed them both with intent. "It would be wise if we all sought shelter before the minions of the night take to the streets"

Turning first to face the commoner, goose still in hand, Celdiur spoke firmly, as he took a few coins from his coffer and handed them to the man.

"Here. These few coins will more than refund you for your lost 'entrails'. Take your goose and go, friend. And be thankful for what meat you can get off of that goose. There are many in Singal that will go to bed this night on an empty stomach, who would quite literally kill to have but a mouthful of that bird. Go now, and may the blessing of Astraea be upon you".

With that Celdiur turned back to face the merchant, already wound up enough by this incident.

"And to you sir I apoligise. I am not a man to throw acusations around blindly. However if I hear of a similar incident involving your stall again, then rest assured" Celdiur fixed him a firm look "You will be seeing me again. You should get home my friend. May the Goddess watch over you".

Varys tapped his fingers impatiently, and frowned. Where was Celdiur? He was supposed to be here by now. He hoped that Celdiur wasn't delayed.

"Rocorad", Varys said, "are you sure he was supposed to-"

Just then, the door opened, and a man walked in, dressed in Eventide armor.

Ah, Varys thought, that must be our man. He motioned him over, and he strode closer to the table.

Varys said, "Where where you? You were supposed to be here a while ago. I hope you weren't delayed by any incidents?"

Beckoning to a passing barmaid to send a fresh round towards the knight's table, Celdiur strode over towards his comrades.

"A minor incident involving some suspicious wares, but nothing too serious" He said as he dragged a stool over and took his place at the end of the table. "I apoligise for how long ive kept you all waiting".

The barmaid arrived with their beverages, and after a nod of thanks and a brief exhange of coin, Celdiur took a long, deep swig from his tankard, savouring the bitter taste.

"But still!" he exclaimed, perhaps to loudly, "I am here now and thats all that matters. So then my brothers"

Celdiur looked around the small, huddled group, his voice lowering to a quiet pitch.

"To business. What shall be our first move in this place?"

Varys looked at Celdiur.

"First," he said, "we will discuss our goals in this area."

Varys looked around warily, then began to speak.

"My main goal is to take control of the sewers, whether it by diplomatically or by force."

"I've overheard that a certain captain, by the name of Dhez'ral, is patrolling the sewers. He seems intent on cleaning it out, and if I judge by what I've heard, he's damn good at it."

Varys took another drink of ale, and continued to talk.

"However, I don't know if he is supportive to the Eventide. What I want you to do is go find out what his views are on the Eventide. Azlanek does not want me talking about my affinity just yet, but he didn't say anything about you."

"Now," Varys said, "what are your main goals?"

PostSubject: Re: District 1: Actions   District 1: Actions EmptySun Nov 13, 2011 12:16 pm

"My goals in this district are simple, Varys" Celdiur claimed calmly, but also with a hint of intrigue, "Though upon hearing your goals I believe that our actions could work to the advantage of all of us".

Celdiur took another gulp of ale from his tankard, pondering over his next words.

"I am here in the slums to do but one thing; to spread the influence of our most illustrious order to the common and downtrodden people of Singal by the way of words". Celdiur paused, "Though if it necessary to shed blood, then so be it"

Celdiur would much prefer to achieve his goals peacefully, Varys and the others knew this well. He would not take life unless he had no other choice, or if he believed it a righteous act to do so. Celdiur continued.

"If we are to fully gain the support of the city's populace then we must do so justly and fairly. Or discretely" He said as he cast a sly grin towards Varys. "It is my intention to go forth into the streets to preach to the people of our Order, its ways, the countless good deeds that we perform throughout the land. And at the same time bring hope and faith to these misfortunate souls through the words of Astraea. However I know of no fitting place to which to draw a sizable crowd to hear my words as of yet, and would appreciate the input of my fellow knights on this matter".

Another pause, another bout of thought, and Celdiur began again, focusing now fully on Varys.

"You mentioned this guard captain, this Dhez'ral, and my thoughts already are that he is a good man with a noble cause. His cooperation during your mission may be advisable. However, as you mentioned we know little of him, or indeed his true motives behind his operations in the sewers. On this matter I am more than willing to aid you, my friend. I shall visit him if you wish to try and guage his true intentions".

Celdiur relaxed in his stool, his head resting firmly on his hand, his elbow resting on his lap.

"Now as to how you can aid me, well, I have a rather novel solution to whatever scum you may take prisoner in your endeavor. I am sure that those sewers are crawling with more than just rats." He said with a firm look upon his face. "Should any fall into your grasp, bring them to me, and I shall ensure that their executions are a public spectical, performed by the Eventide itself. Let it be known to the common people that the Knights of Eventide will not stand idly by whilst criminals and thugs run riot throughout the city, unchecked and unchallenged. Such an act of service to the people will surely raise the opinions of our Order in this district".

Celdiur took a deep intake of breath and relaxed further, reaching again for his tankard.

"Though this is only how I see it, my brothers. I would very much like to hear your opinions of my plan. Though I doubt theres any point asking you, eh?" he said as he slapped Haruch across the back heartily, a cheerful tone to his voice.

Haruch merely looked at Celdiur.

"You'll have to forgive Haruch, he has been quiet of late." Varys said, with a hard look at Haruch.

"Still, he's our best scout here, and I hold him in high esteem." Varys finished.

Varys turned his glance once more onto Celdiur, and said,

"Good. I shall bring any prisoners I find to you, and I'll leave them to your hands. If you want information on an area to preach, or to execute prisoners, then I'm afraid you would have to ask someone else, as we are only very lightly informed, and do not know this area."

Varys frowned, however.

"You must take care you are not target of these thugs. I do not worry about a few men, but if every thug or scoundrel in these areas begin to fear you, they may band together and make your life hard. I suggest exterminating them ruthlessly and quickly, and do not give a hint of mercy, for they may take it as a sign of weakness."

Varys stood up, and so did Haruch and Rocorad.

"Remember, do not act without informing me of your intentions. A quick letter or note will suffice, you do not have to tell me in person, unless it is something large and dangerous. I shall be patrolling the sewers soon, as I intend to do it after dark. In the mornings, you can find me in Rat and the Rabble. If you have anything else to say, say it now."

Varys looked like he was ready to leave.

Celdiur nodded in acknowlegement.

"Your words speak true. If I begin to suspect some form of unity between the various criminal groups of this area then I well request aid from Lord Azlanek. A few more knights by my side will make mine a far less daunting task. However showing no mercy what so ever is not in my nature. Any who truly wish to repent for their sins will be given the chance to do so. The others" he paused briefly, "Are enemies of our Order and of Astraea, and will recieve the mercy of neither".

With that Celdiur rose from his stool and took a glance around the tavern, its confines already beginning to fill with the evening's patrons.

"Night draws in quickly, brothers, and as such you probably wish to place your plans into action without delay. I will keep you no longer".

He shared a firm handshake with each of the knights.

"As for me, I will remain the rest of this evening here. The crowds are already beginning to gather, and Astraea knows that there is much information to be gathered under the influence of alcohol. On the morrow, when you return, I will share what information I have gathered with you. Go now, and may Astraea watch over you all".

Varys nodded. "To you as well, Brother Knight."

He strode out of the tavern with Haruch and Rocorad in tow. The sun had set, and the night dwellers of Singal had begun to come out.

"Come, let us go to the sewers, for some early scouting."

Varys and his men ((I don't know if I have any men. I think I only have Rocorad and Haruch, so I'm asking you for confirmation.)) headed into the sewers, and began to scout.

PostSubject: Re: District 1: Actions   District 1: Actions EmptyMon Nov 14, 2011 11:53 am

After watching his fellow knights exit the building, Celdiur picked up his tankard and quickly downed what little ale there was left at the bottom. Placing the empty flagon upon the table, he crossed his arms and took in the scene before him.

It was a reasonably large room for such an establishment. The bar itself was nestled comfortably in the far left corner, from which the aging and slightly overweight tavernkeeper kept a watchful eye over his patrons. From the door in the bottom right corner (from Celdiur's position) a steady stream of patrons filed in from the streets: Craftsmen, Merchants, Commoners, even a few unsavoury looking characters quickly began to occupy the many scattered tables around the large brazier that occupied a central position in the seedy little tavern.

Of all of these people, however, Celdiur had interest in only one as it stood. What he needed right now was information, and who better to provide answers than the tavernkeeper. Yes, this man would know the district and its people well. He was to prove useful to Celdiur indeed. Casually making his way through the ever growing rabble, Celdiur approached the bar. Reaching his destination, Celdiur leaned against the bartop and waited patiently for the tavernkeeper to serve him. Speaking in a deep, mellow tone, the tavernkeeper began.

"Good evening, good sir, and welcome to the Rat and Rabble! I dont believe ive seen your face around here before. What can I get for you my friend?" the large man inquired.

"And a good evening to you as well, my friend" replied Celdiur in a jovial tone. Casting a brief glance over the tavernkeeper's shoulder, Celdiur asked curiously, "Is that vegetable broth I see boiling in the corner?

"It is indeed, sir. Made freshly by my good wife i'll have you know. Finest in the entire district! Care for a bowl?"

"It would indeed be welcome" Celdiur replied, tossing a few denarii down onto the bartop. A few moments later the tavernkeeper returned with a steaming bowl of the thick liquid, a rather pleasing aroma emanating from it.

"Here you are friend, enjoy! What else can I get for you today?" the tavernkeeper asked politely.

At this point Celdiur leaned in closer over the bartop. "Perhaps some information about the local area, my good sir. I am new to town you see and know little of the area surrounding my residence. Tell me, is there anywhere around here that a man like myself would be able to captivate a sizable audience? Perhaps a landmark or a marketplace of note?.

A bold question, Celdiur thought to himself, though not an unreasonable one. He awaited the man's reply eagerly.

((OOC: I made my own descriptions of the place through the eyes of Celdiur. I didnt reckon that would do any harm to describe the tavern as he saw it))

The sewers:

Haruch led Varys and Rocorad to a dried out well. There were holes for hands and feet hewn into its inside, which allowed them to climb down. The sewers seemed to be relatively quiet and empty. They had walked on for some time when Haruch suddenly extinguished the torch and signalled them to hide in the entrance of a small side tunnel. Apparently Haruch's hearing was better than theirs, as it took several more seconds for Varys to hear the steps. The light of a torch flickered through the main tunnel and the steps of two men approached their hiding. Twice the steps halted, perhaps to check other side tunnels, perhaps for other reasons.

The tavern:

The innkeeper gave him an inquiring look, then said:

Well, there's the marketplace in fron'of the captain's house, but mostly that Vata priest talks there. For some reason the guards don't drive him off as they used to do with other rabble-rousers before. Anyway, why ye're asking? Are ye a preacher yerself?

"Aye, you could say that, my friend" Celdiur said as he swallowed a spoonful of the thick liquid steaming in front of him. It was...surprisingly nice. Guess his wifes reputation is well deserved, he thought to himself. He began again.

"A Priest of Vata? The horse god that the Jatu revere? I would have thought that that religion had died along with them?" He said with a slight scoff at the words 'horse god'. "To each his own I guess..." He said before returning to his broth.

"Ah, no matter. This marketplace will do me nicely. On front of the captain's house you say?" Celdiur pasued for a second, "I didnt believe that Dhez'ral would allow such practices near his own premises. From what ive heard he is a man that has little tolerance for anything, sparing his work. Though perhaps ive heard wrong?".

At this Celdiur glanced at the tavernkeeper, an inquisitive look that indicated a desire for confirmation.

The tavernkeeper shrugged. Who knows what's goin' on in that c'ptain's head? But anyway, ye're confusing our god Vata with that savage god Indar. Ye'd better not go on that way or ye won't make many friends here...

"Indar?" Celdiur said to himself more than the tavernkeeper, trying to wrack his brain for knowledge of Pendor's other religions. The answer he sought hit him like a hammer to an anvil.

"Oh, Vata! Forgive me, my friend, for I have clearly offended you! A simple mix up of information I assure you" Celdiur replied humbly, slightly embarrassed by his statement. "My apoligies". This was not the place to be offending people, lest you find a dagger in your spine, he thought to himself as he regained his composure.

Looking again around the tavern, Celdiur turned back to the tavernkeeper and asked,

"Tell me, sir, do many Town Guards frequent your establishment?

He was curious. If the tavernkeeper could not give him information on this Dhez'ral then perhaps a few drunken guardsmen could. More so, however, Celdiur wanted to know what made this preacher so special in the eyes of the captain. What gave him special right to spread his faith when so many others were denied that right. Strange.

Celdiur went back to his broth and awaited the tavernkeeper's answer.

Varys stood still and hid with Haruch and Rocorad, waiting to see what would happen.

The 'Rat and Rabble':

The tavernkeeper had taken to cleaning tankards with a tattered piece of cloth that did not look like being able to clean anything, though somehow it worked. He looked up to Celdiur.

Guardsmen? Here? Nah, they mostly go to the 'Wary Watchman' - or the 'Weary Watchman' as we call it - on the other side of the district. He chuckled at his own pun. However, I wouldn't rec'mmend going there at sucha late hour if ye don't have a proper escort of yer own...

The sewers:

The torchlight came nearer and nearer and now they could clearly hear the heavy steps of guardsman boots on the wet ground. They were lucky however, the two men walked on the other side of the tunnel, inspecting the side tunnels there as they passed them. When they were well past Varys's hiding. Upon hearing a sudden noise he dared to glimpse out of the side tunnel, just to see two shadows jump out of another tunnel, stabbing the surprised guardsmen, grabbing their torch and disappearing as fast as they had appeared.
