The duke is worried about the bandits roaming the lands and has asked Sir Kamos for help. As a result, you and six other knights have been tasked with training some militia troops along the southern main road. Duke Alamar has sent a few nobles and mounted men to accompany you in this task. They meet you in front of the southern gate, and they provide you with a map on which they have marked a few of the smaller villages within the region.
Spoiler:

They also provide you with the following information:

There are at least three notorious groups currently haunting the region. The first is a rogue knight known as Ivan the Butcher. His group is by far the largest and most experienced group, consisting of many rogue knights, squires and former soldiers of the local lords, as well as bandits. His hideout is expected somewhere in the west. According to travellers the village of Rhuddlan has recently been raided by him, and Ivan also frequently attacks caravans travelling on the king's roads.

The second group is led by a certain Norman Ashby, a commoner, who grew tired of grinding away on the fields while the nobles sit in their castles, drinking wine. Like many before him, he became an outlaw. Unlike most before him, he was quite successful so far. The forest south of Laria are his home, where he harasses travellers and pilgrims and small caravans. The villages of Arwan and Scaerdale frequently report attacks from his men.

The last group is known as Tsobudai's raiders, named after the half-jatu who leads them. They have many horses and fight similar to the Jatu, only not as good. Rumour has it they are sponsored by the Red Brotherhood, or at least do business with them. No one knows where they currently are.

There have been no news from Orglen in weeks.

Cowblynn has reported many of its woodworkers missing.

One thing seems certain: You have quite a bit of work before you...

Barsbrick has been plundered by an unknown group of bandits two weeks ago.

The boorish aristocrat-warrior sallies ahead of the small column; two fellow knights to the fore at his side with whom he boasts of his duel with the marshal of his order. Following them are five pendor cavalrymen, after them the five nobles and after them a further five pendor cavalrymen with the remaining four knights taking up the rear. Infrequently he circles around the column, stopping only to share a quip with the noblemen, before carrying on back to the front.

Half-way between Laria and the village of Arwan, he calls for a halt and turns his charger to face the arrayed column - even on his steed, he seems to slump in a lazy, carefree daze.

"Gentlemen. Arwan and Scaerdale lie adjacent to our positions and according to this map, equally distant - or rather, near. I intend to send one griffon to Arwan to ready the rabble for an attack. How you do this left to you. Two pendor cavalrymen will accompany you into the field temporarily, first assessing the villagers who can be levied, then returning to await any attack from this festering boil, this Ashby fellow, at which time you will return to report this and we will ride, whilst the griffon and whatever villagers he has managed to muster into a mob will hold the... the fort."

He pauses, hoping the condescending sneer of a joke will raise some bandying amusement from the noblemen. Glancing about the roadside, a shit-eating grin etches itself across his fey features.

"But, they won't. I say, the bastards are popinjay bandits, but they know to keep their eyes on the so-called prize. They'll see you three and the muster of villagers. According to this ireport, Arwan is not their only cache of cow-plats and village whores. Scaerdale is similarly prone to attacks. So, two further cavalrymen will scout out - at a distance, mind you - the village and await an attack. Use the woods nearby to your advantage. The rest of us will remain here, able to move to either location and respond to any threat. After that, Gentlemen, you leave it up to me."

He waves his hand dismissively, indicating the appropriate knight and cavalrymen. "Be off. Remember, levying is what I have in mind. Try not to allow too many of the dirt rabble to die. This Ashby... I say shit, and rest assured he will jump in the gutter by the end of this. The rest of you, dismount at your leisure. Except the remaining cavalrymen - stay in your saddle and patrol the perimeter. If night should fall, we will make camp here."

He slides out of his saddle weightily, his armour chinking with the threat of violence. "One of you cavalrymen report back to me every four hours even if nothing takes place. Failure to report and we will assume your death, and we will march on the village you were assigned to. If I find you alive, you will wish you had been found as a festering corpse, by the devil."

You spent the rest of the day in your little camp. The cavalrymen from Arwan report that your knight has found fifteen, maybe twenty men that are fit to be part of the militia, though taking all of them would leave the village even more defenceless than it currently is.

The riders from Scaerdale report that they observed the coming and going of smaller groups, but they kept too far away to be sure. They say the men looked like trappers or hunters, but they could equally well have been some kind of militia or even bandits.

The cavalrymen from both villages request instructions for the evening and, more importantly, the night.

Ibram instructs the returning cavalrymen from Arwan to return and inform the Knight that he is to bring the muster back to camp, taking whatever tools he sees fit with which to arm the peasant rabble with. "After all," he snorts incredulously, "The bastards aren't here to fight, but to be used as shields and buffers by those who can fight." He outlines his plan to the men, and thus to inform the Knight, that he intends to use the village as bait for the bandits by leaving it utterly without defense yet watched over.

"We'll draw the braggarts out, for I have a proposal for the shit-eating clod of a rabble-rouser that leads the banditry."

He dispatches a Knight to return with the cavalrymen from Scaerdale to draw a similar muster, initiating the same action with the same lure, for double the chance of an encounter with the unwashed masses of ungrateful criminals.

(Making this shorter and more concise for your sake, since I read that you wanted to keep these events done within a week or so. If you want, I could just lay out the entirety of my plan for this bandit problem and let you roll the dice, as it were, to see what the outcome is.)

In his scene we don't have the same time pressure, since this does not need to be finished for the main-plot to continue. Besides, your posts are always entertaining. Scumbacks can be a lot of fun Wink.

[I am assuming these orders were meant for the next day. If all this was to take place during the evening and night, please let me know.]

By midday your knight from Arwan returns with 19 young, healthy men. You see a few crude spears or hatchets, but other than that the men are 'armed' with nothing but farming tools.

Your men from Scaerdale, however, are running late. Given the further distance and taking how long the muster took in Arwan as reference, they should have been able to return about an hour ago.

Sir Ibram leans forward on the saddle of his mount, letting out a irritable sigh as he swings his attention to the camp.

"Cavalrymen, mount! Knights, get those militia into formation and get on your chargers! We go to Scaerdale, for it seems we have incompetents in our number."

He would wait impatiently at best for the men to get themselves into some semblance of order, casting a particularly venomous glare to the undoubtedly shambling, awkwardly shuffled peasants and their drab, uncouth appearance. Nevertheless, he dispatches two cavalrymen ahead to scout, splitting the rest of the knights to the fore and rear - one of which, he resignedly orders, staying with the militia to offer encouraging words, tactful advice but most importantly, to keep them in line and maintain their silence as they approach the village of Scaerdale in force. Whether that be to complete a troublesome muster, deal with desertion or confront a raid, Sir Ibram considers himself self-assuredly up to the task.

Slowed down by downtrodden militia, you arrive at Scaerdale in the middle of the afternoon. From afar nothing seemed out of place. The village looks peaceful, and you see people tending to the fields and livestock. There is no sign of your men.

[If appropriate, I'll try to finish this off. Somehow. Need to get back into the character.]

With two cavalrymen and a knight of his own order unaccounted for, the scowling features of the haughty Ibram darken. He raises his voice over the din of clomping hooves and sludge-slick peasant feet to bark his orders.

"Pendor cavalrymen, circle the perimeter of the village on sentry duties. Even spread." He then turns his attention to his assigned Griffon Knights. "Eisen, Hark, with me. The rest of you take up the rear behind the rabble, whip them into some semblance of discipline. If you have to crack a few skulls to give them an idea, by all means. Noblemen, flank our sides and keep up."

Without further ado, he turns his horse to the village and trots leisurely down to its center in a show of force, calling for food and water, as well as the village elder. Despite the seemingly tranquil surroundings, his hand never strays from his sword hilt, clearly anxious to stick it in a belly or two. For the moment, he settles for booting any peasant that comes near him from horseback.

[Edit: Actually, the plot seems to have gone waaay beyond this being anything close to relevant. How best to proceed?]
