PostSubject: Re: The Siege: Section 2 (East)/ Within the City   The Siege: Section 2 (East)/ Within the City - Page 3 EmptyThu Nov 15, 2012 11:49 am

Varis's wedge crashed right through the enemy ranks. The boys had neither strength nor training to withstand such a charge and those that did not scatter were simply run over. Not sending a single look back they charged on after the fleeing knights who followed the main road westward, towards the harbour.

The chase went on and on and Varis already feared they would never reach the fugitives before they got on the ships, but then an opportunity presented itself: The main street made a sharp turn around some old stately building here. Maybe the owner was an influential merchant and had prevented it from being torn down when the street was broadened, but that question did not really matter for Varis. What did matter, though, was the small alley running along the building's back, effectively creating a shortcut relative to the main street. With a quick gesture Varis indicated half his party to split off and they raced through the alley while the rest continued chasing the red knights. Before exiting the alley they couched their lances - and well timed. They crashed right into the flank of the red knights as they came round the turn of the main street, instantly killing some of them and unhorsing the man in robes. Then the other half of Varis's force crashed in from the back and dealt with the rest of the confused red knights. Seeing his escort dead or dying the man in robes drew a dagger from his belt and tried to cut his throat but his own gorget got in the way and a white knight quickly knocked the dagger of his hand before he could try a second time. Two more knights had dismounted then and yanked the captive to his feet.
One of them forced the helmet off his head and now Varis recognised the face below.

With an incomparably hateful expression the captive spat in Varis's direction.
You will die, heretic, the crimson bishop sneered at him.

Meanwhile Aranor's host spread through the southern district. Seeing that the knights actually wanted to help and drawn out by Aranor's appeals more and more people came out of their houses to provide the knights with buckets or even help extinguishing the fires themselves. With knights and squires riding ahead to scatter looters and scavengers their force slowly advanced into the burning districts to quell the fires and save the people caught in them.

Sir Aranor whistled over several of his knights

"Those Red Dawn are still somewhere hiding, as you go out, make sure that the others know that you're hunting for them so they may join when they are done with those looters."

As they left, he used his voice amplification device once more

"All women and children, please move out of the way of the knights. You will be kept safe, but please do not hinder us."

Aranor himself kept on the horse, barking commands at his men and the citizens, aiding them with keeping the fire down.

He looked to the thatched roofs on the top of the houses

"If anyone has any hooks, use them to pull down the parts of the roof before they spread the fire to other houses!"

Aranor looked to the man who's workshop he had saved

"Sir! For the love of Astraea, will you let the women and children go into your store for cover? The Red Dawn may be still about, and my men cannot quell the flames and guard them as well!"

Insulted by the insolence of the traitor, one of the knights restraining Hernlin moved to strike the bishop. Varis raised a hand to stop the knight, but did not respond to the traitor's insult, returning the bishop's hateful glare in equal measure.

Strike not in malice, for such shall overshadow righteous action.
A precept from Astarea. One that Varis must oblige.

The commander turned away from Hernlin and hastened his cadre to remount.
"This area will be crawling with the Red Dawn looking for the bishop once they find out that he has joined them in their escape," he explained, "We must hurry back to the main column, with our prize intact."
The Crimson Bishop wrestled against the two knights holding him, resisting their efforts to place him on a horse.
"The true champion of Astarea, Knight-Commander Tenorio, and the Red Dawn will send you all to the goddess to answer for your dissidence," Hernlin taunted. "Your words betray the sins of your souls, your treachery will fuel the cleansing fires of your 'purification', and your false champion will be laid down before you as he will know..."
Before Hernlin could finish, Varis rushed at the bishop, smashing his face with his gauntlet fist.

"Silence the tongue of the deceiver, make mute the voice of the apostate, answer back the wails of injustice with the symphony of the heavens to be heard from mountain to sea," Varis voiced.
"So will she come, so it shall be," the knights responded.
Another precept from Astarea. One that Varis gladly obliged.

He hauled the unconscious bishop onto the back of one of the mounted knights, assigning another one to guard him and their precious cargo.
"Stay close to the rear, and make sure this filth is brought to the grandmasters feet. If you must, break formation if an ambush looks ill; kill him before he is taken back by the heretics. Understood?"
The two knights nodded and took their places.

Varis then led the cadre from the front back east toward the marketplace square.

They reached the market square without further incidents where a squire told Varis that Aranor and the main force had moved south.

Meanwhile the knights and squires were swarming the southern districts, scattering looters and rallying the populace to quell the fires. Some houses were impossible to save but the growing number of people managed to put out most of the fires in their way. Seeing the grandmaster and his white knights riding ahead of a host of citizens to save the city a small company of mercenaries who had been plundering even spontaneously fell to their knees to pledge their lives to Astraea and fervently helped to save the surrounding houses, trying to repent their recent sins as best as possible.
In the south-eastern district a party of squires chanced upon Blaze and the remaining Berserkers and Wyverns fighting the fires around a small plaza.

Sir Aranor reared his horse as he was directing the citizens to save the houses

When he heard the squire speak of Blaze and the Wyverns, he smirked and shook his head slightly

"Blaze.."

He pointed out 10 Knights and 10 Squires and raised his voice amplifier

"Any citizens who have free hands, take buckets and tools and follow these knights to aid our brothers in quelling the fires to the South-East!"

Sir Aranor then rode in front of one of the flaming buildings, and to the astonishment of his escort, dismounted, took a bucket, and personally aided the citizens in putting the fires out

Varis lead his group south to the Grandmaster. A few buildings burned as he approached, but the fires were being contained as knights rallied the populace to save their town. He searched for Aranor amongst the smoke and chaos, even catching a glimpse of former mercenaries seeking redemption from the Dawn knights, knees to the ground.
"Forgive meh m'lards, fer we 'new not wat we do," pleaded one of the sellswords.
Throw the lot of 'em into the fires, Varis thought.

The knight slowly led his cadre through the people, spotting the personal banner of the Grandmaster in front of a burning building. As he approached, Varis was astounded to see his order's Grandmaster working the bucket line, personally trying to save the endangered building. He dismounted along with his troops, taking hold of his prized prisoner, Bishop Hernlin, by the arm. The bishop was still disoriented from Varis's blow, barely regaining consciousness. The knight-captain sent one of his own to inform Aranor of his presence.

"Grandmaster Aranor,"yelled Varis's knight. "Lord Varis has returned with the Crimson Bishop as his captive."
The knight moved forward and offered to take the Grandmaster's place in the bucket line.

Sir Aranor was filled with rage when he saw the bishop, but did not move

He gritted his teeth

"Bring him to the church, I shall deal with him when these bloody fires are dealt with."

He stopped momentarily and went up to Varis, bucket in hand, he said in a slightly calmer voice

"The people need heroes now Varis, take your third company and secure the bishop in the church near the Market. Guard him with your lives. Make sure no citizens are able to exact revenge on him."

He looked to the knight offering to take his place, and patted him on the shoulder

"Go with the Vindicator, we all have roles to play, and yours is making sure that bishop does not escape justice!"

"Heroes, my lord," repeated Varis in a low voice, somewhat confused.

The knight shook off the question and nodded, "He shall live to face judgement, or the goddess take us." With a salute he set out with his task, knights and captive in tow.
He passed on the orders to his men,
"Well looks like its up to us to keep this sorry little ingrato alive to face the order's judgement once this city is retaken," he said. "If the locals learn that we have the Crimson Bishop, they'll want a piece of the bastard for themselves. Frankly, I would let justice run its course but Hernlin has to stand publicly for his crimes so the kingdom will know the blackness of his crimes, and its righteous punishment."
Varis continued, his tone underlining the seriousness of their task, "Justice will come, but not before it is given; we are to ensure the bishop's life in the meantime. That is our orders, from the will of Astarea to the lips of the Grandmaster. Is this understood?"
The cadre responded without hesitation, "Yes sir!"

He issued his orders:
"We will secure of what remains of the the church once the city has been taken by our order."
He pointed at his knights, "You four, take twelve retainers and secure the church for our arrival. If there are civilians within the church gather them outside the nave in the foyer. Check every room and croft, even the sanctum behind the chancel."

"You two," pointing at the remaining retainers, "find the rest of our banner and have them return to me once their immediate task is finished."

"And you Bishop," looking behind him, "we'll have to change your crimson garments." He motioned to the two knights holding the Bishop, "Stick close to me."

He looked at the gathered group a final time, "Are we clear?" Everyone nodded. "Good, get to it lads."

As the group split Varis went over to his horse and ripped off the white-Dawn caparison, "Don't worry Céfiro I'll get you a new one, I know you don't like the stink of cagada,"he said patting his mount.
He tore off a smaller piece from the horse cloth, covering Heinlin's crimson robes in Dawn-embalmed white.
"Don't you cover me in this ragged filth," the bishop protested.
"I am a bishop of Astra-mmmfff..." Varis used the smaller strip of cloth to gag the man.
"Silence is a virtue my lord bishop," Varis mocked. The bishop's two guards laughed, and marched him forward toward the church. Varis walked on foot behind them, leading the horses by their bridle.

//4knights 14 retainers to scout, secure, hold church. 2 retainers to recall 4knights+80plus retainers after immediate fires are quelled. 2knights+Varis leading disguised prisoner slowly to church.

Varis party safely reached the temple and tokk defensive positions within, intent on guarding their precious captive. So far no one tried to approach them.

A messenger arrived at Aranor's position, telling him of similar fires in the northern parts of the city.

Sir Aranor got back on his horse.

He grabbed a number of knights and squires, and faced the peasants once again

"People of Javiksholm! The North of the city is also ablaze! I must ride forth to assist them! Astraea is with you all, my men will be able to stay and help you! Do not falter!"

He rides off, to the North

Varis took off his helmet and wiped the sweat from his face with a rag he found in the back sanctum where they hid the bishop. He and his knights have just barred the side doors of the church, using anything that had weight and wasn't bolted to the floor to block the entrances.

Varis took a breather and looked over their work; pews were mostly moved, along with a few small bookshelves and prayer lecterns, although he ordered that nothing be touched from the alter or chancel. They're situation was dire, but not enough to warrant sacrilege. He looked at the stained glass, adorned with colored motifs of fallen saints, and prophetical scenes that have yet to be fulfilled.
The Judicator was never one to see artworks as a conduit of worship, but he thought it would be a shame for such a piece to be destroyed, by say, burning torches thrown by an angry mob seeking revenge on their precious bishop.
The irony was not lost on Varis, and he shuttered at the thought.

From the foyer one of the retainers called, "Sir! Sir Varis!"
"What is it," the knight replied, "has one of our banners arrived?"
"No," the retainer yelled, "it seems that the grandmaster has left north where more fires have broken out. Some of the army are moving north with him."
Lets hope this doesn't lead to a turn of events, Varis thought.
He grabbed a couple retainers and moved to the foyer. "Get inside," ordering the sentries outside the church, "and lets get these doors closed."

The men boarded up all entrances as good as possible and then took to guarding them and the bishop, who had grown tired of struggling against his fetters. Distant sounds could be heard within the temple and some windows were still glowing in crimson light by fires in the vicinity of the church, but as time went by there were less cries and more commands or simple calls to be heard and one by one the red glows on the outside guttered out. Several times someone hammered at the main portal, but obviously left when noone on the inside reacted.

Arceon and his men reached the temple unhindered, seeing that most of the fires in the south were quelled or under control. The temple itself turned out to be boarded up from the inside, though. A knight banged his gauntleted fist against the main door.

Open up, in the name of the Dawn.

Inside, Varis' men held the position, guarding their prisoner. Things had grown rather quiet around the temple, but then they heard someone banging on the portal again and a voice demanded that it be opened up.

"Be at the ready," Varis cautioned his men. He and retainer lifted the barricades off one of the main double doors. At his signal, the initiate pulled the door open as Varis stepped outside shield and blade drawn. He relaxed once he recognized the knights before him.
"And so the doors open brother," he said to the knight, "we have orders from the Grandmaster to hold this chapel, what brings you here?"

"Hello Varis, we come in search of Grandmaster Aranor, but it would seem he is not here. We also have some wounded to take care of, maybe they could be cared for here as it is a relatively safe position. There is also a less pleasant matter that we need to take care of....we have the body of the duke." Arceon said to Varis

"You must be Drillmaster Arceon, we haven't had the pleasure but your arrival was noted throughout the camp."
Varis signaled the men inside, and they joined him outside once it was all clear.
"This is sanctuary of the faithful," Varis said, he motioned his initiates, "help your brethren inside and do what you can for the wounded."
He turned back to Arceon, "the Grandmaster went north to quell the fires there along with a full cadre of his column." He watched as the drillmaster's knights carried the body of the duke inside the chapel.
"There will be repercussions for this, but lord Bloodsword got what was coming to him; his walls housed red dawn archers that felled many of our brothers-in-arms, and his cowardice led him to flee while his city burned. Justice has been served, and I for one feel no sympathy for this man. Who do I have to thank for striking down this cur?"
