Day 2: Midday (The conversation of knights continues)

Sir Laurence spoke again, having realised he might be gone longer than Sir Alain.

"Oh, one more thing, Sir Alain. If you get back before me, tell Wilhelm about your trip, and go find the Archdeacon. It would be good if you could persuade him to come here and meet with me, since he has not yet answered my note. If you run across any mercenaries, I might have work for them too - but not if they look too disreputable, I don't want to be associated with half-bandit sellswords unless things get desperate."

Ashton paused, thinking. Then he spoke.

"My Lord, what have you heard of the peasants of Kelredan? Should we gain their support we may also gain the support of the sheriff. How much power does he have to control to decide the Lord of Kelredan?"

"The peasants of Kelredan are much like the people of any part of Sarleon. They are happy so long as taxes are reasonable and they feel safe. I'm sure I could persuade them that I can keep them safer than the other lords, but in this peaceful time they won't see much difference and the other claimants have their own advantages there. More to the point, the peasants would not feel safe in taking sides. I do not think I could get anything much from them. I suppose I could speak with Kelredan's standing forces, and they would be much more receptive to me, but they are too leaderless to be decisive unless I am truly convincing."

Sir Laurence paused to digest the matter further.

"The sheriff could be useful, but I have heard nothing from him. He seems likely to remain neutral, unless he has already chosen to stand against us. I have just heard from someone claiming to be 'a possible friend', who could well be useful, but I have yet to hear further and I do not trust him or her. We shall see."

Ashton raised his eyebrows

"I have not heard of this letter. Who delivered it? What were its exact words? "

Sir Laurence's voice dropped to a whisper

"Did you not interegate the woman? She could have held valuable information."

Ashton looked quizzically at the lord, he did not always understand him but this could have given them the information they needed about this... contact

"She was clearly just a pawn. She would know no more than that she was threatened and told to deliver the message - and the investigation would risk losing our chance to gain from this. We will wait, and let this man find his way to us."

"Of course my lord," Alain muttered as he left to go find his squire Desmond.

He took 20 gold pieces from his personal chest and found his squire milling about near the stables. He helped Alain get armored, and within the hour they were off

Day 2: evening

Sir Alain returned to the town, but only for a minute

he dismounted his horse and sought out Wilhelm, upon finding him, h
e removed his helmet

"Wilhelm, there are no bandits or vanskerries to be heard of. None of the villages report seeing anything either. It seems that the rumors are true about the Western Shores, and the Dawn are holding them back. I will ride now to Morbray, and seek out the Archdeacon."

He then remounted his horse and set off for Morbray castle

Day 3-4: Midnight
Sir Laurence and his entourage arrived back at Belmonfaire.

Day 4: Late morning
Again Sir Laurence could be found at a very late breakfast in his hall. Today he had chosen to wear his full plate, as he had been recently, to adjust himself to its weight again. His two-handed mace hung at his belt, accompanied by an arming sword and a rondel dagger, and his steel-edged heater shield lay on the table, coat of arms facing upward. His helm was similarly set close at hand.

(OOC: Knight arms/armour has no cost, right? I thought it was about time I should specify Sir Laurence's. Oh, and the mace is a "horseman's mace", too long to be useful one-handed on foot, but fine on horseback or two-handed.)

Day 4 afternoon.

Entering the hall and spying the lord a messenger approaches Sir Laurence handing him a letter.

" I have a likely location for the bandits hide out.

I would appreciate any trained soldiers you could spare to assist me will of course provide a portion of the loot for you aid as well as mentioning that you aided me which is sure to help your image with the villages in the area.

Sir Amhain Iobairt.
"

Moving closes then he whispered briefly in his ear.

Continued by PM.

Day 4: Afternoon
Sir Laurence spoke to the messenger.
"My troops will leave within the hour. Go back and tell your master to expect quite a number of them. Their commander will be attending them as soon as I have recalled him from wherever he is now. I shall be leading them across the border, but they will not move beyond there until their commander arrives."

Dismissing the messenger, he called up some of his own and instructed them to carry some urgent letters.

Day 4: Midday
Sir Laurence addressed his steward. Once he had been caught up on the events of the last day (subtly sighing with relief at hearing no Vanskerry threatened the region), he moved on to more current matters.

"Wilhelm, I need a report on the state of the armoury. What happened to those crossbows we used to use against the Vanskerry?"

"Sir, ten of them are still in good condition. I'm sure their wielders have not forgotten their use. Unfortunately, the pavise spikes to go with them have rotted holes in the wood of the shields, and will have to be replaced."

"See to it immediately. There will be action soon. Oh, and issue the crossbowmen with reinforced spears, to use over the top of their board shield pavises."

(700 gold spent for 10 heavy crossbows, 100 for 10 pavise spike sets. Reinforced spears free with Stackford bonus).

"And what of the infantry, sir? They have no equipment better than normal regulars. They would feel more confident with at least some advantage over opponents of the same social class."

"You're quite right. Get them some reinforced tabards, and scour Belmonfaire for any high-quality swords you can find. Do it quickly, I want to be able to march out today if needed."

(500 gold spent for 10 high-quality swords, reinforced tabards free.)
(Total spending: 1300 gold. Total money left: 700 gold.)
Sir Laurence paused a moment.

"Oh yes, and I forgot to tell you - I promised Sir Heinrich he would have a proper investment of 500 gold in Sarleon merchants to secure his childrens' future. When you're done with the equipment, find him here somewhere and help him choose an investment, and get the money from the treasury for it."

Additional spending: 500 gold.
Final treasury: 200 gold.
Regulars equipment: 10 with heavy crossbows, standard swords, board shields with pavise spikes, hardened spears. 10 with high-quality swords, reinforced tabards, standard spears, kite shields.

Day 5 Morning

Sir Aston rode slowly into town with his men dusty and tired, it was obvious the search had not gone well. The closer he got the more that they could see that things had gone worse than just not being able to find "The Merchant". Blood and wounds, a few men were on stretchers at the back of the group. He rode to the captain of the town guard.

"Captain is Sir Laurence here? I must see him immediately"

Day 5 Midday

Sir Ashton paced back and forth in the village center, he began to grow worried when the captain did not come and find him again. He came again to the entrance of the of the town hall.

"Sir!"

Captain Linfeld finally came marching up, clearly tired already from a busy day.

"Sorry for the delay Sir. Milord left a letter and his orders come first. Anyway, he's on the border with some of the men, said he'll be back not long from now, maybe sooner. Worries me he's not back yet Sir. As I see it, you're in charge here for now, 'less Sir Heinrich wants to contest that."

Ashton stood for a while, then said

"Where is Sir Heinrich?"

"A'course, Sir, I'll see to it. Sir Heinrich should be in the manor. I'll send a runner for the surgeon."

Captain Linfeld sketched a crude bow, before marching over to Sir Ashton's battered force.

After Ashton had knocked on the door, a young maiden opened it, gazing on Ashton with curious eyes.

Once he told her his intentions, she bowed and escorted him along the lit hallway, along the carpet. Weaving in and out of halls, she led Ashton to a private armory in the back of the manor. The air was dry and crisp, and a well maintained fire stood in the room. Sir Heinrich was putting on his Mettenhiem battle gear, fitting his greaves on and having one of his serving men help with the chestplate. Once he had fitted most of his armor on, the serving girl announced Ashton's presence, and he turned. The lines of age were easily seen on his face, and he gave a courteous smile to Ashton.

"Well met. Who might you be, and why have you come to speak with me? You must excuse these accommodations, for I am in a hurry to march, or else I would have treated you to a more stately welcome."

Ashton eyed the man, then the room, and smiled flinching as he did, the bruises on his face still made some expressions painful.

"Im not exactly in a stately condition either sir. I have come to inquire about Sir Laurence, specifically where I might find him. The merchant has eluded me and he requested I report back to him in five days, however he is not here."

He stood to attention, he may not have much respect for most people, but elders were another matter. Experience is the only real training a man needed

Heinrich squinted for a second, as if he was trying to recall something, rubbing his empty eye socket and thinking.

"I believe Lord Stackford was going to assist a few other knights in exterminating a bandit threat. I believe it was the Iobiart knights. I believe he's close to the border by now, if he hasn't crossed over already."

Heinrich shrugged.

"I was supposed to follow him as soon as I could, and I was just about to travel to meet him. If you like, you can come ride with me and my men. I'll make sure a horse is provided for you on the journey there and back."

Day 5: Afternoon

As the noon meal ended for the peasantry, and all were trudging back to begin an afternoon's labour, Sir Laurence rode into Belmonfaire, followed by the troops he had taken with him.

After the necessary organisation was dealt with, Sir Laurence made his way to Sir Heinrich's room where he found the door still open as the knights spoke.

"We march tomorrow. It's time to end this conflict."

Clearly the day's results had left him terse and short on patience.
