Iskar jumped to his feet.

What trickery is this? he exclaimed while his mind was working hard.

Silnord, Kelren, Cairngrove! he bellowed and the three men rushed into the room.

All rangers and mounted rangers are to prepare themselves immediately, armoured and with weapons ready. Ready the horses, they are vital to breaking a rioting mob.

Silnord, send out our fastest riders to the idle regiments of spearmen, order them to report to me here immediately.

Cairngrove, send escorted wagons to the bakers and merchants of food and drink. Purchase whatever you can get for 2000 denari and keep it ready for distribution among the poor. Also inform the temple that their help is needed to at least calm the more pious ones of the rioters.

Kelren, you rush to the castle and inform the duke and his guard captain about our measures. Coordinate the movements of our men with the ducal guard. When you have appropriate information, lead our men to the rioting districts together with the ducal troops. Make sure the Griffons and the ducal life guard stay at the castle.

It is important that we do not lower our guard in the other parts of the city.

Then he turned to Squealer, who was still sitting, smiling and sipping his wine.

You like money, don't you? I'll provide you with 2000 denari. Make sure the underworld of Laria does its best to bring back peace and order in the streets. I doubt you would enjoy hundreds of soldiers remaining in Laria for an extended period of time? You'll also get additional 1000 denari if you succeed.

Orders for the night day three to day four:

We have 47 rangers and 50 mounted rangers available.

35 rangers and 50 mounted rangers under arms and ready to face the riot.
Ten rangers have taken up residence in Laria's inns and taverns except the Horn and Stallion whose keeper has been paid to report anything noteworthy.
The two bandits wait at the Clarion Hall until further notice.
Two rangers are secretly watching Brackley's estate.

Remark: It is important the we keep an eye on Brackley and the taverns. The men are to report anything unusual immediately.

Iskar lashed the last of the lether strips holding the silver half plate armour together, fastened the sword belt with the silver longsword at his side, slung the bow over his back and fastened a more elaborate version of the voice amplifying device he had used at Stormcliff Cove at the other side of his belt. A shower of comforting excitement ran down his spine.
Still, this was only a riot, but it had been long - too long - since he had actually ridden out, armed to meet a foe that did not hide in the shadows. When he stepped out on the courtyard 60 men jumped to attention. A stableboy brought his white and green caparisoned saddle horse. He actually disliked riding, but being on horseback now was a priceless advantage over the rioting mob.

He raised his hand upon which the gates were opened and he moved out of the courtyard at the head of the column.

Silnord, he called while the silvery column moved into the dark alleys and the officer rode to his side.

Send a messenger to Sir Kelren at the castle. They are to meet us at the market square with whatever forces the city watch could muster. Send another messenger to both gates. Call in the men patrolling around the walls and make sure the gates are close shut behind them and be kept closed until dawn. I don't want to give troublemakers the opportunity to leave or enter the city unseen.

Silnord nodded and fell back into the column to send off the messengers. While they galloped off the Silvermist force approached the market square.

The Guard captain arrives at the marketplace with about a hundred men. He makes clear from the start, however, that he does not trust more than 60 of them to have the guts to do what is necessary when facing the mob. He suggests using the others to secure the adjacent districts.

Notes on the measures taken regarding the riot:

  • The first objective is to quell the fires to prevent further damage.
  • After that streets leading out of the rioting districts will be barricaded to prevent the riot from spreadng.
  • We will not yet directly confront the mob.
  • As soon as possible large amounts of high-proof alcohol will be left scattered over the district, hopefully making a part of the rioters too drunk to do anything considerable. (Beer would be too weak and rather make them more agressive.)
  • Silnord and the 35 rangers stay on the roofs and clear of the mob and fires. They observe the district, the mob and of course the Gauntlet. If they spot a ringleader isolated from the main mob, they will notify Iskar so the Clarion Call can move out quickly and capture the ringleader.
  • The Red Brotherhood has been paid to silently support us.
  • When the reinforcements arrive they will sweep the streets in force, accompanied by the food wagons and priests to appease the population. Iskar will likely hold a little speech later on at the centre of the district.
